I am looking for help on how to choose the long name on a puppy. Where does the vom or von come from ? Do you just make it up as you go?
Thank You And Merry Christmas

It's usually the name of the kennel the puppy was bred by  for example Fido vom (from) Katzenjammer

What kennel is your dog from?

Of course you can put any name you want on the registration. Just don't use any
bodies else kennel name if they didn't  breed your dog

I am sure I will get corrected if (and when)  I am wrong..     Teeth Smile    but the German language in picking out names is a whole different world.. I  question what the words mean.. there is "von der"(from the)   "vom" (from)  "swinger" (kennel)  "haus" (house) and more that I dont even know.. they have feminine, masculne, and neutral (der, die, das) .. and I have a female that I had to ask Ibrahim about.. all the way back on her bloodlines the dogs are either "hof" or "see" with the same kennel name... it seems that one or the other is every other generation.. so I am sure there is a method to the madness of the way they keep up with their breedings.. I was 'von der' and now 'vom' on my dogs and breed alphabetically as well..(started with 'A' for the first litter and tattoo in accordance to USA/SV)    and when a German kennel breeds for so many years I guess they have to have a way of telling what year and which breeding it comes from !! so... besides me confusing this question more than I already have..
any German members please feel free to help us out !!
I hope everyone is having a good Christmas !! sherry

Our last dog that we got, came from an italian breeder. We did not have a say in the dog's name on the official registration paperwork. It was to ensure that the pup's heritage/pedigree could not be named as something else and if in the future, if we wanted to change his name, we would still have to get the breeders signed permission before the CKC would permit it. We have never called any of our dogs by their registered name. We tend to keep it simple for us and the dog. Our last dog was named Titus and this one is named Wilson

I also believe there are rules to naming dogs. Might want to check the AKC or the CKC....FAQ pages. Overseas they may have a whole set of rules for this.

Swingfield: .. so I am sure there is a method to the madness of the way they keep up with their breedings..

Sure there is...

In Germany people have to register a kennel with SV, the breeder chooses his personal kennel name, mostly it´s a name out of the breeder´s own name, his hometown, his area, and so on.
The puppies of the first litter start with A, second B, third C, and so on.
If he got through the alphabet, he has to choose new names ( no doubles allowed).
There is NO possibility to change any part of the dog´s name, sold or not.
All german Shepherd puppies born in Germany get their own " Zuchtbuchnummer " and tattoo / chip, so you are able to find every dog from the very beginning
Von, vom, von der, von dem, aus ... and so on, like you said, stands for " from ".
Kind regards,
Susie
