Advice required re feeding a bitch with very sloppy faeces.(We are in the UK) She has been tested by the vet who can find nothing wrong with her, she has also been wormed. Initially she was on Royal Canin Maxi Adult but this does not appear to suit her, i have also tried the sensitive food from James Wellbeloved, i wondered about the GSD food from royal canin. I'm at a loss as to find something that she can tolerate. Any ideas appreciated

I feed 3 of mine on Genesis, and have never had a problem! I have 1 lad that had a few gasto problems & I feed him on Nature Diet which he thrives well on. All the best

First reduce the amount she is eating. Dogs will get soft stools from too much food, it doesn't necessarily need to be from the food itself. Switching around from one food to the other can cause more harm than good to a sensitive dog. Limit her treats to bits of the kibble you are feeding. If that doesn't help, then others here can tell you about things like EPI and adding enzymes to the food.

ZernoGSD, Blitzen is correct as a first start. Feed her small amounts twice or three times a day. Add some yogurt to her food and make sure whatever food you are feeding has low fat content. I feed Royal Canin Maxi Light to dogs who have soft stools. I think the fat content is about 11%. The question is whether she does have some bacterial imbalance and something relatively simple and acute, or whether she does, in fact, have some sort of malabsorption problem. You can check the archives here, or post again with more information and we probably can help. The thing I would not do is be constantly switching foods for now. You can also email me privately and I will have a lot of questions for you initially to see what you have and have not tried, when this started etc. schwarzenberggsd@earthlink.net

One thing my vet recommends for loose stools is canned pumpkin. Not sure if you guys have that in the UK, but just the plain pumpkin not the pie mix. Ad about a half cup. If this is chronic though, you need to find out what is causing it and all the above advice is good to follow.

One of the first things I use is Probios. some say you can get the same results with yogurt. Good Luck.

zernogds I had the samething when i used royal canin maxi junior on 2 diffrent youngsters very sloppy faeces both had been on it since they were 3to4 weeks were ok till they got older vet could not find anything wrong so after a 2 week i put them on arden grange puppy both never looked back (in that dep). I think for some dogs it is to high in fat and they cant take it,also i tried the live yogurt that did not do anygoodin this case.
