I use it. What would you like to know about it?

by eichenluft on 27 September 2006 - 21:09

I use it and recommend it - a good product. molly

I use when I am working my dog almost everyday. I use the Salmon oil supplement regularly and I can tell you from my experience that it really improved the coat condition tremendously. Ajay Singh

I used it for a long time with many, many dogs who were already being fed a premium diet. I noticed absolutely NO differences in coat, condition, or energy level. I decided to stop giving it. I think something like it is ok if there is a problem, but for most dogs fed appropriate diets, I am not convinced that such supplements are necessary. In some cases, supplementation can cause problems.

hodie, I absolutely agree with you 100% In some cases, supplementation can cause problems. I would add, that sometimes some supplements are geographically necessary it is important as a breeder to know "Where your food is coming from" I'll elaborate, In some area's selenium is deficient if cattle, or other animals are not supplemented with it then they too are deficient therefore passing the deficiencey to dogs per the feed. In some area's Iron is deficient, Many many minerals are absent from kibbles. I do use a mineral supplement, I do give Vitamins, and I do give Bone Meal, I also use Red Cell an Iron & mineral supplement, Garlic & Yeast tabs also. I am careful not to buy every powered product on the shelf though, I have done my homework on my feed labels and on what I cook as well, and have chose the above supplements as being appropriate to add to our dogs diets. I would say as well, Be Very Very careful as to not oversupplement, But do your homework as well and make sure your dogs are getting what they "need". And as always consult your vet !!!

EchoMeadows you make a valid point about supplements where animals are fed from products derived locally that might be deficient in something. This is one reason why I prefer to stay with food like Royal Canin which has years of science behind it, and product and quality control. Selenium, in particular, is an interesting example as it can kill certain species if too high concentrations are uptaken by plants and then ingested. Vitamin A is another example of a substance that can be very toxic if fed in too high an amount. Many other substances, such as Ca can cause many problems , including cardiac arrhythmias. I agree that doing ones' homework is important. Too many people just jump on the bandwagon for the latest, greatest product and have little idea what is or is not a reasonable way to supplement or feed for that matter. It is my opinion that in most dogs being fed high quality food that supplementation is unnecessary on the whole. But, buying the stuff does line the pockets of those who make the fantastic claims.

hodie, I love it, yes I guess they need to make a living too LOL. I do agree typically a great kibble has just about all that is needed, Unfortunately we can't readily get the "Great" stuff here, so we improvise, I actually don't like feeding all this crap in as supplements, But in our particular case it is however almost a necessity, is it absolutely necessary? well no probably not, other dogs around here do fine on OL'Roy and such crap like ALPO for crying out loud, But in the shelter we see alot of problems with dogs, and with my dogs NO problems, (as of yet) So maybe some of the issues I see at shelter are environmental, "Feed" issues. don't know, but I try to avoid missing anything, Noone said breeding would be easy. Feeding certainly has caused me many late nights full of research. :-)

Hodie When were you feeding the Vertex in relation to your dogs work schedule, how much and on what breed of dog. Further, why did you start using it in the first place? I have manufactured this product as well as several others for 13 years now and I admit that there are some dogs that don't need Vertex. Just like some guys that can eat at McDonalds 3 meals a day and still have a 6 pack. I'll make you an offer. If you want to try Vertex again and tell me exactly what you want to accomplish, I will personally assist you in using Vertex. If you follow the correct dose, feeding schedule and stick to your training program, I guarantee that Vertex will work for you. Good luck to. 1-800-554-5401
