What do you want it for nona?

I've used foodgrade DE before for multiple things.

It kills small bugs like fleas or springtails very quickly. I don't know how quick/effective it is on ticks, as they're a bit more "waxy"...

It's perfectly harmless to those without an exoskeleton, and is a great source of silica (good for Hair, skin and nails), It supposedly also helps kill internal parasites however I have not used it for this purpose.  It doesn't really have a taste it's just powdery/chalky.

The only downside to it from my experience is that it can be a bit messy as it is a super fine powder.

I was thinking about using it for flea control in the kennel building....Right now I don't have a problem as it is cooler now, but I was looking ahead towards the spring...
Wanna have a game plan before the game starts... Just wanted to try something different as they said the fleas get immune to some things...So was gonna try something else....

Not sure if I would want to use it as a worm treatment....I am satisifed with what I am doing now...

I was just wondering if anyone had used it for any reason concerning dogs and what their opinion was...

Well if you do decide to use for flea control in your kennels, you don't have to worry about fleas building an immunity.  DE kills them by cutting them and subsequently drying them out .  I equate it to the fleas walking on glass then bleeding to death.

Then again if there was a super mutant flea that had a crazy tough exoskeleton that was cut resistant and it bred well .......

Eitherway in my experience fleas stop hopping within a couple of minutes  it's safe to handle for people and pets and as an added bonus you don't have to worry that you somehow might be causing cancer

The supplement I use with raw contains it...

Total* Canine Supplement

"One of the ingredients in Total* is a trace mineral-rich product that comes from ancient deposits in Nevada. These deposits are composed primarily of the exoskeletons of microscopic marine life that flourished eons ago. The skeleton of the diatom is made up of secreted silicon which is very hard and sharp. When the animals die their skeletons accumulate on the marine floor and fossilize.

"It is the structure of the skeleton that is of interest. It seems that the sharp abrasive qualities are highly effective in damaging the bodies of insects and worms, literally grinding them to death inside and out. By contrast, the skin and intestinal lining of large animals and humans are impervious and tolerate it very well. In fact, it has some of the same beneficial effects of natural fiber, scrubbing and cleaning the intestinal wall.

Some of the Benefits :

1. Stopped scours even on dogs that had not responded to any other medications.
2. Noticeable flea & tick reduction.
3. Dogs may have decreased appetites.
4. Weight gain due to better feed conversion.
5. Reduction in fecal odor.
6. Elimination of any internal parasites.
7. Healthier appearance.
8. Help eliminate loss of hair coat on nursing females.
9. Decrease or even eliminate puppy problems (kennel cough)
10. Dogs stop chewing up the house - appear to more content.

When I first saw the name of the post I about fell over. As a pipe welder for 42 years i have had to be around it alot. It's been used as a filter aid and used in pipe insulation for years. It is extremely air born and as someone stated it is silica which is no more than glass in dust form. The bag labels had health warnings of inhalation , causing silicosis and other lung problems. I was real shocked to hear a person would want to be around it. I sure would not put it on my carpet.   Hank

Hank, you're talking about chemical grade. Food grade is entirely different.

I use it on all my animals, in their food every day. To my knowledge, none of my puppies has ever had a positive fecal since I started this. If I'm feeding kibble, I mix it in with the food in a plastic bin so the pieces are evenly coated and if I feed raw, I just sprinkle it on or even dip part of it in the DE. They kind of pick at the food the first day they're exposed, but then they eat it normally, though sometimes drink more water afterwards. It's a drying agent, so you want to keep it away from eyes and out of noses, but because it's uncomfortable, not dangerous.

They do warn  asthmatics to be careful about inhaling too much dust.

I prefer giving this every day to feeding my animals toxic chemicals on a rotational basis, and since I've done this, my horses have improved condition w/no other changes.
