Red Sable

Ninja, my past male was the same, not as protective of me, but very protective of the children.   You raise some  very good points.

Scarlet, you could have been describing my female, she is very much the same.  She warms right up after I say it is okay also.  However, yesterday someone came for my old computer desk without me there and she apparently grabbled him by the arm, and mostly got his coat sleeve, thankfully.  Scared the crap out of him.

I'm sure alot of it is genetic of course, as my neighbours female is nothing like mine, but I really enjoy reading what other's peoples GSD's are like, so thank you.

Females for thousands of generations had to be more alert, protective and territorial or they would lose their pups , hunting territory or their life. That makes them naturally better protection  dogs and guard dogs.
Males which  do not establish  that they are dominant  than they do not breed as much and are submissive and pleasant to more dominant dogs. However dominant males are more protective of their pack. Thus males  do not need to be as tenacious as females in order to survive and propagate.
That is why,...
in my house hold I have noticed that males are my friends and females are more affectionate,...well allow me for lack of different comparison,... like a girlfriend. With Debbie males ignore her as long as I am around. When I leave the house males are fierce protectors of her.
Females are always on guard, more alert to danger or intruders, more tenacious."My" females do not care much for Debbie when I am around but will not leave her site if I leave the house.   I like both equally for different qualities. If I would have just one dog, I'd probably would  choose  a female but if I would end up with the male that would be OK too.

I agree with Jenni78.  My male is more attached to me and my female is more attached to my husband.  He works for me and our club president (female) but wouldn't work for the training director (male).  As far as protection, he doesn't like for anyone to get close to me (and that is something we are going to have to work on).  She seems more in tune to us and will only bark we feel uncomfortable.  Maybe males are just a little more independant?

Aagh,

A touching, heartfelt subject. One of the better ones. My reponse will be a little late but like I said it was a good topic. I used to believe the majority, not every time that opposites bonded best. I have had a lot of dogs and I remember I had to sell my shepherds when joining the miltary. During my first stint I wanted another GSD but was searching and searching for that"one". I was in New Mexico and ended up buying 2 Chows. I love all dogs/animals but partial to GSDs. Isaid to myself that I would raise and learn the chows and would wait til they passed before I would invest in GSDs again. Seventeen years laterand five years traveling Europe they finally passed away when I ended up in Maryland. They were a fantastic pair and gave me two litters totalling ten pups.Where I was in Germany they loved them because there wasb;t any around that area.

My male, Reiker, is eight and half yrs WGWL, and was too be a police K9. My department didn't want a K9 so we missed his window per say. At six months in training he was better than others at one and one and a half years. He is as close to perfection as you can expect. Has only broken my command twice in all of his life. It was like he was housebroken in one night. Loves children and at one of my friends place had no problems whatsoever with their pekenese (?) dog. At times almost human like. And the protector! He sticks to me like glue. I'll even be taking a shower and he's laying next to the shower.

My female, Anastacia, 17 mos, Czech lines,  when she was apup would whoop up on Reiker. Reiker would look at me as if to say, "do I have to take this?" Ana would run full speed and dill him like a linebacker. And she was just a puppy! I live a mile off the main road and there's only one way in and out. Ana can hear whoever a mile out on the gravel road and lets everyone know someone is coming. She's young but a proyect of sorts already, She'll be trained  for explosives. In the beginning I was a little worried. She was soooooooooooooooooo head strong! I didn't know if it was her being a female? Czech? Or her lines? But she had boken my commands at least twenty times before she was six months old. Seriously thought about an E collar. I said vic, you have to try harder! Now she is right up there with becoming a great dog. I was strong with obedience for Reiker but for Anastacia and Arabella I turn it down. But Ana sticks to me like skin! At my feet in and out the house. Trains like no tomorrow and faster than the wind. Reiker is strong and fast. Ana is strong and faster!

My second  female, Arabella, 13 weeks, is just going to be unbelievable. Even though she'll be trained for explosives I think she would be strong in bitework also. I'll decide on her later. The irony now is how Ana would whoop up on Reiker? Bella w hoops up on Ana three fold. She'll be crouched down like the cheetah getting ready to pounce on the gazelle. Scoping out Ana and then, BAM full run fying through the air and tagging Ana. 13 weeks and not afraid of a thing. She sticks to me like skin also. At times will even walk through my lags when I'm walking. The weirdest/most enjoyable thing that has happened is Ana just had her second heat just after acquiring Bella. She has matured emensly and bonded with Bella so strongly that they are two peas in a pod! It's hard to explain.... but Ana is like a ? "deeper" dog. I don't know if it's just the breed? But I can honestly say I've been blessed with great dogs. And Bella will be a bigger force than the other two. What's cute is at nine weeks she was doing all of this and even after going to the bathroom she would do the what do you you call it? Kicking up the tuffs of grass and dirt like the males or bulls. All three are the same in certain aspects and  then so different in others! I'm just glad to experience both sexes and each one individually.
