Red Sable

by Red Sable on 21 October 2010 - 00:10

This question has been asked many times, in fact, I believe I asked it years ago.  Anyway, now I have formed an opinion.  I've always had males.

Someone once said males protect the property, females the human.   I agree with this.  This is my first time having a female  (could be the breeding) but she seems to worship the ground I walk on, no matter where we are or what we are doing, she is tuned into me.  I've never had another dog like it.  She is very protective of me no matter where we are.

Sometimes it can be annoying because she is very nosey,  nothing gets by her, however, she's grown on me.  Anyone else agree or disagree for that matter?

My female was a very good protector of the property....On the other hand my male is very protective of the property, me, the truck, the house, the yard, .....or maybe it's himself that he's worried about, this has yet to be determined....lol...

My girl is very territorial too it seems, however, when we are walking or visiting, the male will go off and pee on everything, sniff everything, forget about me, where as she stays by my side.

The male I have is the first one I ever raised from a puppy so I am going to base my male dog experience on him.  He is more protective of things--houise, yard, his toys then I would say he is of me.  At night when I go to bed he jumps up and settles in beside me and once he feels I am all cozy and OK he gets down and goes on about his agenda.  I think he gets hot too because most of the time he goes and lays on the bathroom tile floor.  I have had exclusively females for 25 yrs and they are nosy--right under your feet all the time--with exceptions.  I have my boy's daughter--she will be 3 in Feb. and she likes to stay outside and keep tabs on what all goes on out there.  She is the true watchdog of the bunch.  But now the baby--she is 17 months old is NOSY with capital letters.  She has to be where I am every second.  I love my boy--I got him at 10 wks old and he will be 6 in Dec. but I really really love the girls and doubt if I will ever have another boy..................

I don't like the behaviors being considered "male" or "female". I don't like a dog that's glued to me. "Right by my side" at all times and "protective" are often insecure and just lacking independence. I do like a dog who checks things out around him, checking in with me and keeping me in sight, but certainly not glued to my side.

I do think males often bond more strongly to female handlers and vice versa. My females are more likely to test me, and while one is extremely bonded to me, she behaves very similarly to my male and does not display any of the behaviors the OP is describing.

My female is very sociable, likes people and is very friendly....however, when people get into close proximity to me, she gets guardy.  She used to get up pace around me and vocalize.  She was not happy that someone was that close to me and God forbid if they acutally touched me!  *sigh*    I have gotten her to a more relaxed state and now she will woof or whine when people get close to me, but she doesn't get up and circle or outright start barking.

She is also protective of the property, but not so much that I am worried for the delivery man. She accepts the Gardener without so much as a woof or growl, but when I had a substite Gardender, she wouldn't let him in the backyard.

She's a dependable and sensible watch dog, I wouldn't say she is a kick-ass guard dog, willing to take on any foe, no matter how formidale!  But, she is a very good watch dog, ever vigilant and shows discretion when choosing what to be guardy about.

She is a 2.5 year old Czech bred female....btw.

My female is not insecure at all.  She is adoring, there is no other way to describe it.  In fact she is more confident then the male, at least right now.

Kalibeck

by Kalibeck on 21 October 2010 - 01:10

My male is easier going than my females, my females, Kali & her daughter Ansgar, are tuned into everything that moves or breathes on the property, & those 2 hang on me like they were my shadow. I wave my arm, Kali goes out to check whatever I gestured at. She's my right hand dog. Ansgar watches my back. Beckett, he'd let anyone walk right up to me, or the vehicle, or on the property.....but if they try to touch me, or anything else-that's when he suddenly gets really serious. You might not even notice him sleeping next to me, but when you get within about 8 feet, look out! You're in for a surprise. Kali lets you know the minute you set foot in the driveway. Or look at me on the street, or brush by the car; she gives plenty of warning. Ansgar barks at everything right now, she lacks the mental maturity to distinguish a nuisance from a threat. It'll come in time & with work. Kali is more dominant than Beckett, but Beckett tries to control who comes & goes in & out of the house. Kali doesn't care if we leave, just take her along. I'm quite sure Kali would bite, given the provocation....Beckett? I'm not sure....maybe. And Lil' Bit??? Right now she's in the doghouse!!! She's so friendly........but today she's been just about as naughty as they come. So, males versus female, different, but both good? jackie harris
