Gorgeous dogs, Jacob!! I am curious about one thing, though.  What makes a long coat a long coat?  Is it only the longer hair on the backs of their ears?

I'm asking because when I think long coat, I'm thinking a dog with long hair all over its body, like a Collie.  Yet many times on this board, I have seen dogs referred to as long-coated, and I can't really see it, myself.  Then you have what are called plush coats, and 'long stock coats', etc.  I don't really understand the difference, because what I think is a plush isn't, what I think is a normal coat isn't....I'm confused

Crys,

Thanks for the compliments.. my old boy, my first GSD that I had for the last 12 years looked almost identical to your dog in your avatar. I bought him  in Alabama. His name  was Bagheera..... those dark bicolors are really striking!

To answer your question in regards to long coats. As I understand it, the length of the actual coat doesn't really designate the dog a long coat... meaning a dog can have a pretty short coat and still be a long coat. A long coat in deed is a dog with feathering of the ears, tail, and possibly more. More importantly however is that a long coat doesn't have anywhere's near the amount of undercoat that a Standard Coat or Plush Coat G.S.D. has, so they have a longer or different style outer coat to protect them from the outside elements.  As most people with a Standard Coat Shepherd will tell you, and I know from past experience that they will shed like it is raining fur..... Luckily people will tell you that Long Coats just don't shed too much at all!  They are right... they shed about 70% less!!!!!   He is a little shaggier, and sheds just a little more than she... she is like MAGIC,!!!!!

Thanks again and Very BEst,
Jacob
