Dark, rich colors are what I prefer.

Purple with red polka dots.

No, really, I like the really really dark sables and solid blacks the best. The more black on a dog the better, IMO. Not a big fan of the way the "normal" black/tan saddlebacks look... they have to have a dark mask and neck for me to like them a lot. I do like the blanket backs and some bicolors.

Not a fan of white GSD's at all. Liver and blue are... meh. OK, but not in the standard. I'd never buy one, I don't think.

But coat color doesn't matter.  I care more about the dog itself.

Love the really dark black sables...    #1

and after that handsome jett black...  #2

(Pictured are "V"Olek Vom Maineche and "V"Marin Zur Krombach)

My consern with folks breeding "for rare colors" is that many (dare I even suggest MOST) breed only for a color, and do not breed for other aspects of a good  complete GSD.

This is just a question so please don't take offense... just wondering why so many WL breed sable? Back in the day when all GSDs were working the sable was not a favorable color and they started breeding the black and tan to keep farmers from shooting their dogs. WL people seem to be very into the history and breed standard for GSD so I am just curious why the black and tan aren't as popular in the WL as the sable and black which (as history states) were mistaken as wolves and shot by farmers. Again it is just a simple question that I hope no one takes offense to. I find all (sable, black, and black and tan) to be very attractive... just depends on the dog wearing the coat:)

Kevlar, there are many black/tan working line dogs.  I think there are probably close to as many black/tans as there are sables.  Working line breeders usually do not pick based on color, so by doing that you are bound to end up with sables... as if you breed to sables, you will get sable pups.  (usually).

The working line black/tans are not the rich reddish color you see in the show lines... again IMO it is because working line breeders usually do not breed for color (other than maybe looking for good pigament).

I know when looking at a stud dog, color is one of the last things I look at... I have personal color preferences, but would never pick a dog based on that.

I guess I have just noticed more WL sable on here than I usually do. It makes sense that working lines wouldn't care as much about color (with in breed standard). Maybe it is that SL are usually black and tan rather than WL being sable?? Not sure... just seems like SL people seem to prefer black and tan and I see more sables in WL. Not that it really matters...

Right now I really like the true bi colors, then the blacks(true blacks too with NO bleed thru), then sables. My next male I get soon I would like to get either a bi color or solid black. But I will take any color. I too, like several have mentioned, look at the total package.

When I looked at my 2 pups I looked at 1) parents/lineage, 2) pup, 3) color. To me I wanted a dog that was aesthetically pleasing as well as working. I would take a good blanket or bi color over a better solid black pup. I have to love everything about the dog for the next 10 + years. Why not get exactly what I want ;)

I love my Bi Color but I would have taken green if he worked like this one does!!!
