In reply to Mackenzie’s post dated 28 December, I will endeavour to scan it and post it. I am due to go into hospital 27 January, so it will be done soon after that.

Thank you Marilyn for the update. Best wishes for your hospital visit.

I have been looking into the German Lines and it seems Bodo v Lierberg was a carrier of epilepsy, and his brother was also affected. His son Joll Bemholt was also a carrier of the disease, and his brother was epileptic.

Joll came to the UK and became an English champion. He was born in 1964. His sire Bodo v Lierberg was born in 1962.

Ahh...there's a ton of West German working line dogs that are descended from Bodo! :(

Atlas v Trutzberg was an American. Champion. He was by Bodo v Lierberg and he was born in 1969.

Was Atlas epileptic, though?

by Mackenzie on 13 January 2023 - 18:01

Sunsilver as Atlas was in the US I have no knowledge about him. I think that the US people may have some knowledge on that. It might be that as he is a direct descendant of Bodo it would be worth the US taking a look into his progeny and see if anything surfaces.

I lost my first German shepherd to epilepsy in 2020. He had just turned 3 years old when they started. Now that I've found this thread I really wish I could have had a pedigree on him. I've been the last two years finding ways to blame myself.

by Mackenzie on 27 January 2023 - 09:01

Dyzpi don’t blame yourself too much because what you do not know you cannot be blamed for the consequences. Also, there are many other people out there who have had the same experience that you have had.

If you get another dog then get a pedigree and check it out on this database. If you cannot discover the answers then all you have to do is ask and someone may be able to come to the rescue.

I recently discovered this thread so I thought it would be wise to share that my current bitch (her pedigree) developed epilepsy when she was ~2.5 years old.

I'm sure many of those on this forum won't be surprised of this fact after glancing at her pedigree—I certainly am not considering what I know now when looking for an ethical German Shepherd Dog breeder. Unfortunately, seven years ago, I had no idea what I was doing when looking for a German Shepherd Dog; now I'm paying for my ignorance. Words cannot describe how stupid I was then, and how stupid I feel now.

To those that are in the same position I was in seven years ago: please, educate yourself! Don't make the same mistake I made!
