I wonder if it is time to change the way of working dogs biting. There are in different countries, different methods of biting. If changing the law will take a long time,But a dog can be changed for one year with hard work.If you work on this dog to keep himself will have a perfect result.Believe me, this is possible.I've done it with one of my dogs. The dog takes a weapon (knife, ax stick) and then bites a man.Difficult to learn, but not impossible.

They just changed the laws in Australia this year when a police dog got stabbed by a criminal, he is back at work, but the out cry from people had the government put the police dog were it belongs, as an officer of the law and carries a prison term.
And dam some pencil pusher I would have shot him. Sorry not my partner, friend, mate.

Eddy do you mean the dogs should let go and leave or go after the hand with the weapon?

RIP Quanto.  A Police K-9 and handler have a very dangerous job.  A sad loss, but I'm sure Quanto will be remembered for the great job he did.

Eddy,
they must teach the dogs how to fight an attacker with an armed weapon............i don't understand why they teach a dog to hold a bite while he is getting hit.

This is not practical and would not be very effective.  There are many reasons why we don't train dogs to do this, none of which I want to get into here.  I'm sure if you think about how the dogs are trained, what they are trained for and how they are utilized, their temperament and behavior, you might understand.

The police dogs in my city where bullet/stab proof vests. They get them after about a year of service. K9 officer was telling me the other day that they have to be fundraised for since they are so expensive.

Unfortunately, a bullet proof vest would most likely not have saved Quanto.  Bullet resistant and stab / slash resistant are generally different types of vests.  Every one in our unit has a vest for their dog.  In the 5 years of having the vest for the dog, I can think of a dozen times that I actually used it on my partner and I work my dog on the SWAT team.  Vests for dogs are not practical for patrol purposes, they are too heavy, too cumbersome and will cause the dog to overheat and fatigue faster.   It is great to have them, very nice that they are donated to PD's but only have limited use on the street.  Even our most elite, special forces military teams do not use ballistic vests on their dogs in combat missions.

If the dog is trained to bite or shoulder or backup "bad man" has no chance to react.Good effect if the dog bites and playing different places of the body of the helper. So there is more time. The basic idea is hands down the  "bad " being far from dog.
