Mystere

by Mystere on 23 August 2013 - 13:08

I have had plane ticket and hotel room booked for months, now.  But, I am not undecided about going.   At this point, I am inclined not to go to Philly.   Might feel differently in another month or two...but, I doubt it.

Mystere, did you mean you were undecided about going?..If so why is that?..

Me and clc29 are making arragements to go together..We are currently trying to decide on a hotel and stadium...We would like to be close to the host hotel ( which is booked )  we are not familiar with the area and heard that some spots are better then others..Any input would be great!..

thanks..

Steve1 too bad you can't make it it would have been nice to meet you!...:)

Blitzen are you going?
..

Paul15..You mentioned crossing the bridge how far will that be in driving distance to the stadium?..

Mystere....I was very curious about your comment as well......Mostly because....well....the way you wrote it sounds kind of depressing. I hope that's it's nothing serious and you've just had a change of plans.

I honestly don't know why anyone who trains their dog for this sport would not want to go.

It's an opportunity, that doesn't come along (in the US) but every few years, to watch dogs, trained by people from all over the world compete. It's opportunity to learn (a lot of things) and have fun while doing it. My husband and I were in the Czech Republic, on vacation, last year during the WUSV in Styr, Austria.... We were so close to the event that we took a day and went to watch the competition. My husband, who likes dogs and supports me in training but doesn't really care all that much about IPO, came away with the WOW look on his face.....We talked about it for months. I think I still have that "WOW" look on my face....LOL.

As Ruger1 says we've been looking at places to stay. Neither one of us has ever been to Philly so don't know the area. Since the host hotel is sold out I've been looking at other lodgings close by. If anyone has any suggestions and/or experiences for other accommodations it would be greatly appreciated:)

No, nothing  personally serious.Regular Smile      I may change my mind and go, but I am just not  enthused - certainly not the way I should  be to spend a few thousand $$$.

The Wyndham chain are usually nice hotels.  But, please  have someone in the area check it out.   I have discovered the hard way that even a "nice" chain can include a dive, or three.  That happened to me in Canada just last month-- had reservations at a national chain that I normally like.  Got there ,and the place was a mildewed dive.    It was 5 minutes from the venue (Canadian Nationals) and the host hotel was 5 minutes on the other side. THAT one was the best hotel I have ever stayed in for a dog event--all the rooms were suites with kitchens, living room, totally separate bedroom, fireplace, dishwasher and washer/dryer.  It was bigger than my first three apartments--NONE of which had a washer and dryer, or  a dishwasher in them.  Regular Smile Plus, room service.   It was worth checking out of the dive ( and forfeiting a night's payment)  for!!

This  WUSV is in a  "not so nice area " --so, I would urge you not to put yourself in a situation of driving around in an unfamiliar area a lot--like driving back and forth to Jersey.  Remember, this will be in mid-October, when it is getting pitch-black at 4:30.    The Wyndham is just a bit down the road from the host hotel.  Safer than going back and forth to Jersy, IMHO.

Protection and obedience are right beside the Commodore  Barry Bridge. No where near "bad" areas. Cross the bridge and you are in nice, clean Gloucester County NJ. It is about a 7 or 8 mile ride over the bridge and taking I295 south one exit to some regular hotels. There is a Holiday Inn and a Comfort Inn I think.it's exit 10 and you are close to Mullica Hill, NJ an antique shop area.  I could check about other motels. . But it is minutes  from the stadium. I read that tracking is down around Fairhill, MD which will take about 30 minutes. It is a few miles west of Newark, DE.on RT 273

Let me know if you have any questions abt this area.. I have lived here my whole life. It doesnt get dark at 430 ever. It is better to be safe. The politicians gave torn down the worst areas. The Wyndam is close but plan you routes. You can take 95 south enter  the bridge road and the exit to the stadium is actually ON THE BRIDGE. It may look like you are going over the bridge but you take this new exit made for this event.

Deanna, I'm going for the GSDCA National only, Arriving on the 8th, going home on the 13th. I don't want to be away from home for 2 weeks. We are staying at the Red Roof, very close to the airport.

When I lived in PA I showed dogs in Phillie many times at the old Civic Center, parked a mlle away, hauled my dogs, table, stuff on a dolly through the streets at 5AM. Attended classes across the street at the the vet school, went to the jazz festival  on the docks, took dinner cruises, walked center city Phillie to the jazz clubs after dark and saw where Rocky trained for his fights.  I was  never concerned for my safety and never knew anyone who was and if anything, it's safer there now than it was then.. I'd much rather go to Phlliie for a dog event than NYC where I had my wallet boosted at the Westminster show and my credit cards maxed out at The Gap and Macy's Teeth Smile.

Suck it up, when  your time's up, it's up, doesn't matter if  you are in Philadelphia, PA or Hooterville, MT. It's going to be worth every minute of it to watch those trials and the National.

Blitzen,
When was your wallet "boosted" in NY?  Crime is everywhere, but NYC is a very safe city to visit. I was there last weekend and had a fantastic 5 lb lobster at the Palm.  I had a plane land on US 1 in Dover, De right in front of me.  I have some awesome photos.  I agree, when your number's up it's up.  Live today like it's your last, but plan ahead in case you live to a really old age.  Being old and broke is something I am working hard to avoid.

I'll be up there over the weekend, hope to see some folks from here.

I lived in NYC going to school for 7 years. And felt very safe. Ibelonged to the 125th food coop.
I read about that plane landing Jim. I was at your Flinks seminar in Jan 2008 brrrrr!
