I'm so sorry Jackie. THe pain of seeing our beloved dogs experience health issues is almost unbearable at times and it is so frightening, not to mention that we feel extremely helpless. We just have to stay strong and positive for their sake. I'll be praying for the best for you and Kali.

I'm so sorry for you and Kali. This is the very worst part of being with these wonderful creatures. They become part of you. I hope and will pray for the very best outcome for the 2 of you.

Oh, hell, Jackie, I lost track of the skin issue thread and didn't realize things had gotten so involved for Kali... Did they run a thyroid panel on her already, and rule out hypothyroidism? Keep in mind that both calcinosis cutis and c. circumscripta are NOT uncommon in GSDs, and it's still quite within the realm of possibility that Kali *is* hypothyroid, and this issue is related to that.
Hopefully the vet is able to give her some relief tomorrow--it may require the use of prednisone, but with your health-care background, you know there's nothing wrong with that as a short-term treatment while a diagnosis gets confirmed and a plan of treatment is drawn up. My thoughts are with you, Carl and Kali...
FWIW, I seem to be having luck keeping my former foster dog's discoid lupus in check by keeping him on microlactin (the active agent in Duralactin); in reading the literature on microlactin, not only can it be useful in reducing inflammation (which is why it's thought to help with arthritis discomfort), but it also has been shown to have a suppressive effect on the autoimmune responses. He has also not developed any additional calcinosis circumscripta masses in this time, either.

Sending thoughts and prayers your way.
