And where did these GSDs at animal control on post come from?

GSDs and other animals picked up on post come from irresponsible pet owners. I'm pretty sure you were able to figure that out, as your posts I've read in the past indicate that your fairly intelligent, although sometimes prickly. :) The military population is a reflection of the civilian population, there are more people who think of animals as property, but there are good, responsible people who love and care for their animals, consider them family.

Yeah you made my point,
military families are the same has civilian families when it comes to dogs ending up in animal controls hands.
I think a GSD needs more than what some offer as a life and hate to see any animal left behind.
They require more than most breeds something some people do not take into consideration.

"....if German Shepherds were banned, the Vice President of the United States and his family, which includes his newly adopted German Shepherd, couldn’t live on a military base."

First of all as a breeder of high drive Import gsd, I would not wait to buy an adult or older pup or german shepherd.  Find out first if the base you intend to be on allows a german shephered as NEW LAWS and rules are in place for Americans here and abroad..

Second I would never recommend a Rescue german shepherd for a family with a new born child only months old period.  I have always felt this way, and have bad tales of families who did. First the pups or dogs are there for some reason and it is usually unworthy behavour or health reasons unknown to the rescues or dogs that do not train well as they are from unreputable breeders.

THIRD: i WOULD buy a pup , up to 4 to 5 months old from some working line breeders here, who IMPRINT their pups , like I do, and by that time that pup has already been crate trained and is of already a sitz and a stay behaviour.. NO matter how many pups they sold , they usually train them if left with them.

This makes a better bond and the kid and the pup GROW up TOGETHER, getting corrected at the same age pace. AND A dog requires the same love and discipline with   POSitve Reinforcement like we should so do our kids.

Adult gsd or even year old ones already show jealousies and are way to big to re train and if that pup is not bonded to your child you have double duty to do...bond to the child, cautiously and by 7 months old my pups can show plenty of aggression if you  pull an ear or tail , but if that baby pup is raised as a new pup with a new baby child they love each other and learn each others tugs and wars are not a no no or they are corrected and do not mean anything but play..JUST like a mom german corrects her babies, the pup will tolerate the baby , but an older pup may not.

"Just my opinion from Experience."  I have plenty of  pup in homes with kids...but I also help pick that pup from my litters...as an experienced person who watches all indications and knows my pups well.

Like someone said,,,it is not the lines,  well it is in a way, it is how the pup is raised and how it is IMPRINTED from BIrth...I imprint my pups the next day after birth...it begins then with massage and the reversing of pup to learn dominance and kindness of what a message does to a new birth pup. HAndled by a person also being most important

Amy thanks for that article, it seems that all US bases are taking a uniform policy...which I guess is good except this whole banned breed thing is utter BS. It has been proven that there is pretty much no science behind it, at very least the German Shepherd is not restricted but Dobbies?? Really? Honestly I think a shepherd is a little more nasty lol. Hopefully someone steps in and says look, dogs help these family when their partner is off at war, offering protection and companionship and therapy to those who are selflessly serving their country.
