Rico

by Rico on 28 July 2011 - 16:07

It really can be better. He was V84 in 2006 but he deserved more in my opinion.

Look at Hero van de Lentfert Hoeve from Bert Tienkamp (Holland).

*Sighs*

Its like comparing apples to oranges.

Well I thought this a very nice dog, from what could be seen in the video.

I am not surprised he was placed at 84, as I believe his conformation is too moderate for top placings at the Sieger. Last year I found that the (very) few dogs that appealed to me were all well down in the rankings.

RLHAR - yes, it is comparing apples and oranges. However, it does prove that not all showline are as awful as the ones in the original video. Credit where credit is due?

Abby,

I want to, I really do but it just makes me sad.

The TSB in a Seiger show is like watching a top of the line bred sport horse, a horse that should be doing Grand Prix Show jumping, instead doing a low level schooling show and people getting excited about his clearing an 18 inch fence.

The dog is not being asked for anything in this and what he is being asked to do, by the standards of what he should be capable of, he's doing a very weak job.

           I like apples and oranges,

come to think of it I never met a fruit I didn't like..; )

I like all types of fruit but I don't expect an orange to be an apple or an apple to be an orange.

HA HA Apples to Oranges.

Not the same thing at all, now are they, yet, what we are talking about are supposed to be all the same breed.

Good training can make a dog look better in Sch. That is a given. It is also what is called settling, as in "Oh well, the dog is good compared to.......... and so on.

When an average performance is given such good ratings when the training was more very well done, it makes me recognize that no one gets it, or sees what I am saying. Won't be the first time.

RLHAR - I absolutely get what you are saying. I do. I don't believe that the showline dogs are correct or have the construction to be able to work (all day) as a GSD should. I am simply saying that some are better than others, in reference to the ones in the video.

Jeff, it isn't 'settling'. I personally would not want 'settle' for a showline dog of today, for me most have gone too far down a path away from working ability and a functional construction. I am just trying to be objective, and this dog is undoubtedly far superior to the ones shown in the first video.

Breeding for show has undoubtedly brought about degradation of working abiliity. It has also brought a watering down of what is required to demonstrate working ability in the show dog, since there is no doubt that most showline dogs today could not hope to be able to do what was required of them many years ago before the split. Fortunately it is not lost to the breed as it is retained in the working line dogs, and I believe some breeders are trying to get back to the dogs that could do it all by bringing in some WL blood. I know you hate the idea of that, fine that's your view, but many would like to see the breed get back to the 'universal' dogs of the 60's. I certainly would.

BTW I DO see what you're saying, really I do.
