the black "saddleback" markings on brindle is the common color for some breeds - Plott Hound and chihuahua for two -

yes, obviously possible to get a papered GSD who has brindle markings, but this only indicates an outcross (to dutch shepherd or other brindle color) at some point in the pedigree.  It is unfortunate that akc doesn't police it's registrations, unless of course someone's red flags go up and they actually pay for a parentage verification and go back some generations to figure it out - which most people would not.

I've seen ice-blue eyes and curled tail in akc registered GSDs as well.  Does that mean they are purebred mutation?

Interesting, I've never seen a black & brindle Chi and we don't have any Plott hounds in the UK that I know of.  But, I'm with you on this molly.  Far more likely that these anomolies are the result of cross breeding than from a new mutation, which actually is very rare.  And the likelihood of brindle being carried for umpteen generations unseen, is remote.

A first cross Dutchie/B&T GSD wouldn't though produce any black & brindles.  Unless of course the Dutchie carried tanpoint, which is possible given the herding origins but unlikely, as all over brindle is so common in the breed.  The sable allele (true sable not wolf sable as in the GSD) is required for all over brindle and as sable is dominant over tanpoint, a first cross B&T GSD and Dutchie would produce all over brindles, just like the Dutchie parent.

Elkoorr, didn't that pup stay brindle more than a week? I can't remember.

Pod, the Plott Hound is a US-created breed, recently accepted into AKC (not that it matters) - a heavy-boned coonhound, used also for hunting bear and boar.  They must always be brindle - usually solid brindle, but often the black patterned brindle.  Pictures below.  Chihuahuas do come in brindle as well, sometimes solid, and often black with brindle "points" and I have seen a saddle-back brindle chi before, just can't find a picture right now.
