Could be an issue where she's too 'loose' in the back-end to achieve a tie, too-I've seen this before. Sperm is emitted over a period of time during the tie, which is why its good to have one, even if its just a few minutes. I would feel much more confident for a breeding with a tie than one without one.

If he was held in place, then yeah, she might get pregnant anyhow. But then again, I would think the odds are against you. I have seen a single puppy produced by a female who couldn't tie. She was never rebred.

Yes, it can happen and has happened with my bitch.  The dog penetrated only for 5 seconds (I repeat,  for 5 seconds) on 12th day and for approx. 7-8 seconds on 14th day.  I was very disappointed but the dog owner said the dog takes only 10 seconds with every bitch has has coupled with (around 8) and every bitch delivered.  My bitch delivered 12 live puppies.  Now, believe it or not, its true Mr. Yellowrose of Texas.  U can very well send my story to Ripleys.

cheers

Yes, Bitch can conceive without a lock,LOCKING in dogs is a natural mechanism for assuring that ejaculate is held up for some period of time in the vagina and the fornix. The Direction of the vagina is upward s in bitch and the lock doesn't allow spillage of  ejaculate for say 20 mins in which time the sperms enter the cervix and move forwards. The thing that matters the most is whether the female has ovulated. Most of the times the cause for no locks are either anatomical eg strictures etc or the bitch is not in right time.Progesterone is secreted at the time and after ovulation it causes the vaginal mucosal wrinkling this also helps to sustain the tie.Oestrogen in the preovulatory period causes vaginal turgidity and slipperiness and may be the dog slips.Try mating your female  a bit later in the cycle if she doesn't conceive this time.Hope this helps.
