That is not what this thread is about and the OP did not ask that. SUre before buying a pup if you decide to say yes you can go and see them for yourself. But that is not what this is about that has nothing to do with what the op asked.  That is not what Bhall said either. THey told the op to go visit all the breeders lol No is going to go do that unless they are buying local. Many of us are interested in breeders located on all parts of the world. None are local.

I just want to interject on this if I may (sorry to OP for hijack). I was looking for a GSD PPD and after months of research on this board and speaking with a few respected members here I whittled my breeder/dealer choices down and I went and visited them. Yes, I had to fly get a hotel eat and so on. But I think the above statement is a bit off solely because if you're going to make a lifetime investment (forget the money part) you should know what you are getting and who you are dealing with.

Email sucks, videos lie and pictures are not worth a thousand words!

Just my opinion and it's worth exactly what you paid for it.

michael so who are your top ten?

Destiny

Honestly I'm not educated enough to give you a top ten. I will post a thread with my findings during my search in the next day or two but if this helps at all, I'm not interested in the things I assume people on here are interested in. I don't care about titles or shows. All I care about is if the dog is healthy and can do the job I need it to do. My post wasn't a dig at anyone, I have no ax to grind or wheels to grease I just know what I have done and the length/s I'm willing to go to make sure I get what is best for me and my would be dog.

I don't have a top ten because I don't think there are 10 breeders on this board right now that could even be considered for the list. I agree with something Keith said earlier--at one time there was but not now. There are exactly 3 people that come on this board now I would deal with and in fact are in my future plans to deal with. One other thing when I saw the title of this thread I knew it was going to end up in a pissing match--people can't even agree on what time it is much less something as serious as buying a puppy. And no I won't reveal who I would deal with and never deal with. Another pissing match and I'm just not up for it tonight..........

I have my own preferences whom I'd get a dog from and whom I wouldn't.  I have a little experience in the area and know a few people.  I would suggest to anyone looking for a puppy or a dog to do some thorough research.  I would caution against taking advice or opinion from members that have never seen the kennels, bought a dog or worked a dog from some of the references given.  I have my own criteria and standards for what I want in a pet or working dog.  There are some good breeders mentioned and some that well are not so great IMHO.  Do your homework before making that sizeable commitment.

My opinions based on my experience with these breeders by interacting with them (visiting them, seeing their setups, the depth of their knowledge etc)  and also based on feedback from other people I respect, are provided below.

Note that the following are not to be considered in any particular order (most of the below folks have one thing in common - a lot of knowledge about the GSD, breed for versatility, not get caught up with the latest  fads and have specific objectives behind their breeding programs)

1. AlpineK9 (Hans) or Jinopo (Jiri or Petr Novotny)
2. LiberatoreK9 (Ang)
3. Joanro (Joan R)
4. GrandCanyonK9 (B Andersen)
5. Jenni78 (Jen, Eisenherz)
6. Gustav (Don't know if he still breeds but again someone with decades of knowledge and experience on the GSD, like Hans above)
7. Duke1965 (Herby)

Note that even the most respected of breeders will have rare slip-ups  and will also be targeted by others who may not have the best of intentions at heart.  You just have to wade through all of that and be able to filter some of that out.

PS:  I personally am not a breeder but have a couple of working line German Shepherds, and a Chocolate Field Labrador.

I thought Gustav had a special breeding program for police departments only, I would include him on top of my list too, Joanro was mentioned by several members so far, he must be doing something more than just good. I never seen posts by Liberatorek9 before.

I am not a Police Department so Gustav won't do.
