"The bad thing about the showline sables is that they all seem to be washed out. Why is this?"

Dunno, but I see plenty of working lines that look the same.  My pure working line sable is as "washed out" as any of the sables posted in this thread.  I actually like the showline color a bit better because it's more red, I really don't like a washed out sable look that's more gray.

Most of the dogs here look very well pigmented, I don't understand how these dogs look washed out??  I have seen some very pale sables, but not in this thread.

When you read my post above where I quoted Malcolm Willis' explanation about the patterns on the Agouti allele, you will find your answer there. Showlines generally follow the a-s, the saddle pattern which means that even when they are sable, they usually only have a saddle pattern on their back, even though some have a bigger one than the "regular" black and red/tan. That explains the perceived washed out look.
As Liesjers said: It looks worse if a workingline sable is washed out (has faded pigment - look at the E-series as Willis described) because their sable pattern is a-w (grey) as opposed to a-y (red/tan).
And dogs like Ronaldo von Arlett, Margman Thorsten and Timo vom Berrekasten are definitely not washed out. They have more pigment than a lot of the black and red dogs.

This sable female is  3/4 showline with 1/4 of DDR mix. She is much darker. Even as pups, the dogs that got a little mix are bolder colors, in MOST, not all of the pups.

The above is a photo of our puppies aged 1 week. The sire is a son of VA3 Yukon v d Bastillie and the dam is Korzwin Whitney. There are 6 sables and 3 black and golds . The sables are very dark in colour, They are now 10 days old. I will put up more photo's as they grow so you can see how the colour changes.
