Jenni  so is that a perception that sables have denser under coat or is it really true? I been told that my dogs are shedding a lot more then someone i know who has a white Shepherd but i assumed its because white fur may be less noticeable then a bunch of cream colored under coat...but now that you mentioned it i am often amaized at the thickness of undercoat and the constant 365 days a year shedding less so in winter but there is always a huge balls of hair when you run your brush through it...especially on rear end and neck......

Hmm. Not sure if it's a rule, per se, but I do see more sables w/a very dense undercoat than other colors. These 2 have much thicker coats than my other sable or either of my blacks. My bicolor has a very thick coat, but no one can compare to the shedding and density of undercoat on these 2 boys I pictured. It is so thick that you really have to use some kind of pick to get into it; a furminator won't work b/c the teeth are too close.

As I said, I have a sable w/a more "normal" coat than these, so I don't think we can paint with such a wide brush. I have one black w/an average coat and one black w/a thick coat that blows it like a sable almost. The other black doesn't blow her coat except on her back thighs, and the rest of the year just sheds moderately. <shrug>.

I never thought much about it either until this thread, and wondered why I haven't noticed it so prominantly in other dogs.  On your boys pedigree pic, I could almost mistake your dog for mine, they look like brothers.  I can see some of what you're saying, a little moreso than the hints I see of it in my boy's sire, just not really obvious.  Brushing never blended the black strips together, that I can recall.

My boy was sable and had deep red undertones.

My Favorite color is Sable with awesome pigment! And I completely understand why they named this big boy Ox!

It's not that it blended the black together; it's just that when you take out the undercoat w/a Furminator, you lose some of the clarity in the lines. If untouched (which he has been for a few mos; I should take a current pic), it's SUPER noticeable.

YogiBear, I would not consider Lisa a patterned sable....My opinion of a patterned sable is one that has a saddle that is sable, and there is not a significant amount of sabling on the legs and the rest of the body....Now That is my opinion of a patterned sable.....I am not saying it is a documented description by an expert, but only my opinion....I am sure someone else has another opinion and description, which I would not argue that their opinion is wrong and mine is right....We are all right in our own way of describing the same pattern..
