Can't say I've had trouble with a BH, but I did leave my first Utility ring in tears after bombing damn near every excercise. She and I clearly needed more work, we relaxed, trained some more, and every qualifying leg for her UD she placed.

If she didn't do it right, it's because she wasn't ready and was not trained enough. Let me play devils' davocate here. You say she f'ed up. Okay. She f'ed up because she didn't want to do the excercises. That is our job to teach them that obedience, while serious and non-optional, is also awesome...so why would she want to do anything else?

I don't care if a dog is being a total @ss is and is 110% aware of it...they are only behaving as such because they have not been taught to behave otherwise. And that is a handler's responsibility.

Don't be angry, work hard, reteach if you must and chalk it up to learning. An angry handler is not a teacher.

THANK you, KCzaja, for joining the chorus of those telling the TRUTH, not this "it's not your fault"  bad doggie nonsense.

Sitasmom: At first because I couldn't trust myself and now because we are working on off-leash exercises.

Your dog isn't ready to be trained off leash yet, even the off leash exercises need to be done on lead.  After a while you can go to a 30' leash.  You need to start all over again from the beginning and get the foundation work correct before you try to go further.

What is the TD of your SchH club advising you to do?

She will stop and not take another step if the leash is dragging.......

The TD is the one that encouraged me to enter.......

He has said nothing.

(earlier post)
"In a few weeks I will be getting an evaluation from a very close work mate and friend of Hero's breeder. She will then decide what our best course of action is. In the City where I live, there are many different highly successful trainers and this person knows most of them. Once evaluated, she will give me contact information for the trainers that she feels would do us best.

This person will be evaluation personalities of our dogs', my husband's and mine. She will also see the interactions going on.......
The goal is to come out of this failure with the tools, and backup support to be resplendent the in every thing we decide to to do in the future."

I intend to do whatever she advises................we have already talked about starting over or practically over.......

I look a bit differently at working my dog, than some people.  I don't make the dog work....I make it want to work.  I  believe, if the dog makes an error, I must look at myself, as to what I did wrong.  Was it my training?  My handling?  Preparation?  Did I train enough?  Overtrain?  The dogs only know what we teach them.  If you can convey a clear understanding of what is expected of the dog, then become a team, not a boss....you will succeed.  Consistency, Fairness, Enthusiasm, and Dedication...will lead to success.

Good Luck!!

We will be attending our evaluation tomorrow.......the 3 week vacation from training was nice........and I'm looking forward to knowing where we will be continuing our training....and to gain the valuable knowledge to become a better team.
