all time fav. females: Umsa Bungalow, Steffi Teikerhook.
my SAR litter was from a Otis Jacobinger Schloss (Mink VH Wittfeld son) to Jenny Teikerhook (Bodo Lahnufer/Steffi daughter) and of course the pet bred girl I had mentioned.

The question was posed why I like a hip xray done from 6 months to 1 year best. At this time frame, the hip has a probability of aboout 91% of staying the same.
So then, you mean to get a clearer picture of genetics, prior to any potential environmental causes muddying up the picture?

There have been studies to show that environmental/nutrition can can contribute to h/d.
There are no studies to show that environment/nutrition are a major causative contributor to h/d in breeds that are not prone to h/d.
I can not imagine a diet so poor in a developed world that it would cause h/d in a normal dog. A diet this poor would also be evident in all parts of the dog. Organ development, growth rate, muscle development. It would not be a normal dog in all other aspects if diet was this poor.
Environment, this is an out that you see on many "contracts" so that the breeder is not responsible. Only a traumatic injury or gross overweight can contribute to h/d at an early age.
H/D is 99.9% genetic.

Not one person here has disputed that, the way I've read it. I don't think anyone here has insinuated that HD is ever "all environmental", or environmentally influenced without first being "genetically predisposed".

daryle, I am replying to the OP, who obviously has not had the "pleasure" yet of burying the mistakes.
I just wanted to say, that in my experience, the major cause of h/d is genetic. Everyone is welcome to learn at their own expense.
best,
Rik

It's not necessary to keep meandering about the environmental aspects of HD. All environmental influences aside, the thread topic is about how to select for the most genetically healthy prospects. I don't think the importance of genetics has escaped the OP, so there's no point in reiterating this.
My estimated best producers under the SV system are ranked in the list below. Aly (mentioned earlier) has an unrivaled record, by a significant margin above all others. The predominating blue colored producers are from Fero bloodlines.

sorry daryle, did not realize I was "meandering". Just offering from my experience with h/d.
really wish to be "social" here, because the OP ask a serious question on the GSD and getting started correctly. I have a little knowledge on starting incorrectly and doing the wrong things.
best,
Rik

Aly is also sire of Sirk von Belchen who is also a good hip producer. OP asked for good hip producer....gave them one!

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for all of the great feedback. This is fun. Although, I think I may be getting a case of numb butt from my computer chair :)
Nanu,
You said, " I would have to ask why one would go for a dog that produces defense".
I am not looking for a dog that is high in defense or one that comes from a line of aggressive behaviors.
However, I have to consider all of the characteristics that make up the total package and defense is part of the total package.
Darylehret,
What do the other colors mean?
Gustav,
Looked at Sirk. Like the FH titles on dams side. How is he known for temperment? What do the letters G-BSP at Ally's name mean?
What do you guys think of Javir Talka Marda?

It means he got a Gut (Good) score at the Bundesseigerprufund,(National Sch Championship of Germany). Aly was a nice dog in structure that had a nice medium temperament. He was not a hard dog like some of the workinglines, but when paired with strong females he produced very very well. He wouldn't hurt you in temperament and he usually improved sructure and hips. He is in a lot of WGWL pedigrees these days.
