BTW, the family that has the pup I just saw from this kennel has no intention of doing protection work, just wanted a nice balanced GS representative of what they were when they grew up.

Thats EXACTLY what a balanced well bred GSD of correct
temperment should be, at the very least.

'Jack of all trades' and 'beauty in utility' also
sums up a correctly bred GSD of sound nerve
and temperment.

I have learned so much by reading the different postings on this website.  As yellowrose of Tx said, maybe in a few years I will be up to the dogs that are produced by most of the breeders on this forum.   I will have to see.

I did not intend for this posting to cause any conflict.  The dog I saw just happened to catch my eye (kind of like when a lambergini catches your eye) and I knew this was the best place to ask some questions about the dog and the description in general.

Please understand:
1.  I know better than to get in over my head with an animal.  I might be new to the [harder] side of a GSD, but I am not new to raising animals in general.  If I do not ask questions though, I will not ever know what is over my head.

2.  I have a house full with the new pups and I am not really looking to get any other dogs at this time.  When I decide to do something or buy something, I have a tendency to ask alot of questions and beat the issue to death before I step in.

This is why I have asked some of the questions I have (like what are the indications in a puppy with a high prey drive).  I want to be sure that I place any of the puppies that I do not keep in the best home.  For this, I need to ask questions of experienced breeders so that I can get an idea of what type of dog the puppy might be.  My lack of knowledge on what make a "hard dog / high prey drive" could set one of the puppies up for a bad home.  This is what I am trying to avoid.

side note:  I MAY HAVE ONE OR TWO SERVICE DOG OUT OF THE LITTER.    A couple of the puppies are showing alot of Rose's temperment.  It is too soon to really tell, but I am keeping my fingures crossed.

FawnD:   GO look at this thread that VKGSD did today on her BH...it shows you just the basic things you can do  with one of the pups you keep...and look forward to achieving.


 Long down stay with out moving is the first picture...if you start in a month or so doing that and focus on your face  by your new baby pup   it will be a great adventure ...

THAT IS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT  Yellowrose.

Rose did all of this so naturally, it was amazing.  That is why I have taken her as far as I have and I am hoping to get some pups the same.
From the day I got her at 8 weeks, people, large objects, loud noises, nothing phased her.  She took everything in stride.  As for focus on me, that has always been 100%.  I must have got her at that perfect time; her bond with me is great.  We could be in the middle of a parade and she will automatic do any command I want.  She learn destractions with very little effort from me.  (unlike all my other dogs; destraction work took considerable effort on my part.  My male GSD still takes a lot of work and correction, even after being 4 years old).

It was funny yesterday.  One of the puppies and I were playing and the puppy started groweling at me.  Rose immediately got up from nursing and inserted herself between me and the puppy.  Not sure who she was protecting, me or the pup.  Either way, I was so proud of her.  I know Rose will not do the extensive protection work that I see other GSDs do.  I have always wondered though if she will at least do the instinctive protection for "her pack."   I am starting to see some of that.

BH is short for Blegeit hund (german), or companion dog

Are there competitions for BH?  It sounds like something fun to do with the new puppies that I keep and with Rose.  Or do these competitions only allow registered GSDs?

 Yes, your BH  is required now before you get SchH 1 or you can get FH first.

 Any kind of dog, no registration required , but dog will be listed as Mixed breed...

 There are very strict rules as to how you approach the field, where and how you get ready for the trials, or routines and what you have to be aware of in the Schutzhund arena..

  Good thing to do is find a club somewhere and visit it  After you read the book, then you will understand what to ask and it will make sense what you may get told...Most clubs donot like people with MIXed breeds or unregistered dogs.  ....  so be aware...not all clubs

  You can also go to AKC and get a     CANINE   GOOD CITIZENS   in most towns there are members of akc that give these tests and award the certificate.

  The BH is a routine that was in the video...New up date rule changes do some things a little different now and the Schutzhund site can explain that   ..right now you just need to see with pictures and this book tells the origin and lots of good info for a beginner in Schutzhund.

by  Susan  Barwig and   Stewart Hilliard...this is a good NEWCOMER  to schutz book you can understand.
