I see your point....but I wouldn't train my dog (especially early stages) with that narrow finished application or "rules of engagement" strictly in mind.
Once the dog is past foundation and strong in his work...and the ONLY thing I use him for is PPD (not sport like PSA)...I do believe you should train the way you fight , so your reasoning certainly fits there.
But...I still have to say, there's nothing wrong with it for training, even advanced training....it doesn't hurt the performance of the dog (provided the majority of the dogs overall training revolves more around actual scenarios he may see),..... provided there is a trained call off, no harm no foul.
A great way to train a "PPD only" dog who's done escapes to be more aware of his handler....every time the dog goes on a long distance send a second decoy attacks the handler, dog is "called off" the 1st decoy and is rewared by getting a bite on the second decoy.
Escapes are fun for young dogs...I personally wouldn't take it out of my foundation, it's too easy to alter later depending on what you want to do.

Bad guy took the money and ran off, Brinks Guard shot and killed him as he was running away.
Court upheld the decision - Manslaughter-, the Brinks Guards job was to protect the money & personal safety. Once the bad guy left the Threat was over.
As I have said before, owning a a REAL PPD is a Liability and a Responsibility.

I'm sure you didn't mean to type "every time" when talking about the second attacker.
Yes I did....if you want the finished PPD ONLY dog to stay near the handler and never do a long send...then yes.
I would not do it every time because I use my dogs for sport too. I won't do that excersise with my current dog until she's finished with SchH (messes up the focus on the guard). I have done that excersise with other dogs, but certainly always mixed it up.

-Either you train your dog for a long send and escape AND also train a "call off"...provided you have a solid call of there is no harm keeping the excersise in your training.
-(PPD ONLY dog) Or after the dog is past foundation and you want to condition him to stay near you...you do that excersise every time the decoy escapes (I'd also mix in a call off with no 2nd decoy, reward the dog with a tug for comming back) until the dog comes back to you on his own if they attacker runs away.
-Or just don't drop the damn leash (lol).
No need to eliminate the escape or long send in training, especially foundation training.

By saying "every time" I was just giving a "how to" example later in training to condition the dog to stay near the handler (in light of your distaste for the PPD doing an escape),....I personally woudn't train that way (would opt for the solid call off) but to each their own.

Interesting topic.
First off, who ever said this, "As I have said before, owning a a REAL PPD is a Liability and a Responsibility" is dead on. Too much for most people really since most clients do not want to spend the time or money to train/live with such liability. What they want and what they can live with (skill level) is a different story, almost always.
The video is good. Not really showing PP. It is all in prey. The dog actually takes his eye off the decoy, which is a NO NO in PP training vs sport. I am facinated by the total difference, really. Sport really is a trainer's sport.
PP is all about realism, setting up scenarios and training for scenarios in which the client resides., it is about hidden equipment. I see none on this video. Also, no sleeves, unless it is for developing young dogs learning the foundations of grip work or trying to balance the dog more into prey.
Pirate.......how is Tony N? Wow, it has been about 5 years since I came over and worked his dogs on the suit.......long time. I am the PSA decoy who trained with Elmer.......the French Ring guys. I trained with american bulldogs and malinois, at the time. Tony really had some nice sheps. LOL, I finally have German Shepherds now..........
