I was shocked to read that AnneGSD had looked for healthy puppies from GSD breeders and as she quoted  "I could not find a puppy where both parents had been scored, I thought I would easily find a puppy where both parents had been hip and elbow scored, Not so easy"  After reading what has been said on this site I would have thought that finding breeders who do all the health test that they talk about would have been easy to find, but it seems not to be so. It's like a lot of things that go on in the dog world a lot of talk but very little action, people shout but only at a few, why not shout out and name all of the GSD breeders that do not do all of the health test, not just pick out a few. Have a list of breeders that do all the health test and breeders that don't test for all health issues this way the buying public can then see who they can go to and who not.We in this country love to put down people yet fail to address the problem by getting the full information and make use of some second hand hear say then make it sound worst by adding more hear say to the information. If all the GSD clubs are good as they say they are in thinking about the health of the GSD even dog sites, for them to get a list of breeders who breed to all the correct health issues and to the correct breed standard should be easy but I would not hold my breath.

Mandatory health checks are EXACTLY what the GSDP (and many before them) tried to get the KC to introduce.

The basic idea is to issue a "purple pedigree" to the progeny of parents who have met all the relevant criteria (health, survey, work) and leave the regular type of pedigree to those that don't!  A simple procedure... right?  Would our KC accept this?  Well, they've never even bothered to reply to the oft repeated request.  How dare we come up with good, workable and progressive ideas huh?

So, there are many people out there trying for our breed... not shouting about it, but making every effort to get it right for us and the puppy buying public.

Hopefully, we'll be making our own rules and regs in the not too distant future... that's what we should all be backing imo... the KC has had every chance to improve dog breeding and dogdom in general and they have failed miserably... again and again.

Are people not aware of the stakeholder group that was set up last year and other things that are currently going on in the background????

Any moves now to step outside the KC umbrella most likely will be seen as a manoeuvre to escape change to improve health and welfare in breeds. There is a much, much bigger picture going on here.

While I completely agree, support, and endorse health testing, it is also important to remember that the Shepherd dog encounters a number of health conditions, many of which there is no health testing available yet prior to breeding.

Mandatory health testing is a step towards progress but it can never be the final step and certainly not the bigger picture. Genuine breed health improvement goes way, way beyond that.

this is a good reply from Lief to this question: www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/forum/25973.html

If people would like to know of current elbow research I  would recommend reading the last few years proceedings from the International Elbow Working Group www.iewg-vet.org/

All those that breed in the UK need to bear in mind that your potential puppy purchasers have redress under the Sale of Goods Act, if you do not do all  Health tests available for the breed and any of the pups have any of these conditions inherent in the breed you can be held to account in a court of law, therefore you need to do a minimum of hip/elbow scoring on both sire/dam and haemophilia testing on the sire.
I have used this in the 90's to obtain purchase price back for a defective pup and also kept the pup.

I just looking .so is it illeagle then to sell puppies where the dam as not been elbow scored.
some hobby breeders who only have a female hip scored and breed with the same bitch but
with abelow average score of 6-3-3=6 must have elbows done when the vet we use say's we don't
do elbow's.many top breeders go to this vet because he is cheap on vaccinations and doing -
hip scores.i can tell you we don't pay £395-0 for hips and elbow's and then bva fee's on top
the most it as cost is £120-for hip score and that includes the bva fee why dont vets get there
prices right if one can do it and still make aprofit then every other vet can. -
any info we are not selling puppies or breeding puppies just for money.but i dont want to go
to my local vet to get rip't off (ie vaccinations £50- bva screnning £275 hips only.
give me info.

Hi Rachel
What I am stating is if there is a test for the breed and the sire/dam have not had it done then later on one of the pups develop the condition whether that be HD, ED, HC then the purchaser of the pup is entitled to go to court and seek compensation and dependent on the age of the pup and emotional bond the Judge is also likely to allow the pup owner to keep the pup aswell as obtain compensation, in the case of the pup I had I didnt seek compensation to cover vet bills for the operation just asked for purchase price back, which I got and kept the pup.

I travel to a vet in Out Rawcliffe for hips/elbows I dont use the Vet my dogs are registered with, last one I had hips/elbows due to age of my GSDs was in Summer 2006 where price was £192 plus BVA fees for both hips and elbows.
