I use a plastic-teeth undercoat rake.
Spent $50 on my first FURminator several years ago - friend "borrowed it," and apparently.....still is.
Spent $10 on the knock-off FURminator by Bamboo. Worked....okay (non-LH, of course.)
Spent $1 on the plastic-teeth undercoat rake (new - was an overstock donated) from the local pet section of the thrift store, and I couldn't be happier.
I now have 25 of the $1 undercoat rakes that I send along to friends when they adopt/purchase a dog/puppy :)

I have great results with a double undercoat rake and then a wide tooth and then narrow tooth comb (the comb I have has both on either side). Gets a tremendous amount of loose hair out when used in this order. For sure my 2 favorite tools!
