Im sure there are SAR groups and SAR dogs out there doing a great job and yes it can be one of the most challenging endeavors. Any SAR trained dogs I have seen....and no its not many....have been so pathetic it is scary. The training that some SAR groups do is laughable. Although....and sadly...I can honestly say that I have seen more LE K9s that were just as bad. To me a "pet" quality dog needs to be the best and most stable of any. They are the ones you would entrust your family with.

Sporty,
Funny, I see lots of SchH dogs that could never cut it as SAR dogs and have no chance of being Police K9's, they make good pets though.  I see far more Police K9's that would be great sport dogs and do a nice job as working K9's.  I see even more K9's that do a great job, but wouldn't make good sport dogs.  I see plenty of basket case GSD's that with lots of work can function as pets.

When I test potential K9's I see many that could be decent sport dogs, some that would be great even  sport dogs....But, few I would consider for a Police dog for our unit.  The selection process would be very easy if I just needed sport dogs.    I do know many Sport people that have outstanding GSD's that could do either, they are the exception.  We have two dogs in our unit that could be National level sport dogs, regardless of the sport, based on balanced drives, focus, tracking ability and grip.  Since what rules out most dogs from high level competition is a natural, full, genetic crushing grip; these dogs have it.  They will bite full on sleeves, suits or bare skin.  Serious defense and a rage that is easily brought out, but controllable and the dogs remain clear headed.

I also do training with SAR people and we track / trail our Police dogs with them.  When you see what their dogs are capable of it is amazing.  Following tracks that are weeks and months old solving homicides is pretty impressive in my book.  We train our dogs to track on hard surfaces, like neighborhood streets.  Most sport dogs could do this, but most SchH people have trouble tracking on grass.............which is easy in comparison.  Perhaps, we have higher standards, better training or select better dogs.  I just don't see what you see.

JMO,

Jim

Most of the PSDs I have seen that I thought were really bad....it was a matter of poor handling and training.

Yes you have much higher standards if what you say is true and I am impressed.

I can only remember meeting 1 K9 handler I was really impressed with. I was also impressed with his dog. I know they are out there.

Sporty,

ahh. I read couple of pages in the fromt and couple in back!  No worries

I got some emails and One dog I had already in the "stud" notebook. I did little (Really little) research on him but I cant find any videos of him. I am looking for training videos, no flashy cut offs.
The dog is Frits Haus von Freyberg. Any suggestions for videos?

Got them thank you! I will see the dog this year. My dog suffered an injury and I could not take him to regionals last year so I didn't go. I had Frits marked for research. I have couple other dogs also but the owners are not " comunicating" well. LOL

I am not going to breed her untill the late fall, winter so I have plenty of time but I like to meet the dogs prior so I know first hand.

Thank you very much.. How tall is that boy?
