I was not implying that this discussion is a slanging match; I meant that many breeders will not come on the PDB anymore because many threads end up in a slanging match, so there may be more breeders who are actually testing, but they will not know about this thread.

I think any DNA tests which can help the health of our breed are invaluable and so far this seems to be a very positive discussion.

I live in Ireland and recently put a dog to sleep that had DM. It is a horrible disease, as the dogs mental capabilities do not change, but he slowly became paralysed. I contacted the Veterinary College in Dublin, and told them of Doctor Clemmons findings in Florida, but they are not trialing any drugs here for DM, and so there is no cure. Maintaining exercise is all you can do. My dog was Sired by a popular German import who won many shows here. I have my suspicions that he may have developed DM, because I have been unable to find out what died of !  I am not aware of any breeders here testing for DM.

Kesyra - I thought you meant this thread and that bamboozled me!  I understand what you are saying about some people not coming on here any more. That is why I think it is so important that our breed clubs/council/GSDL whoever, take the reins on health.  Making sure that knowledge and recommendations reaches breeders.  Conversely, I am sure breeders would want it known that they test, so that people who want to buy from tested dogs can find them. Perhaps the GSDL/Breed council could help with that too.

I am looking for a breeder for the longer term future for my friend who has a DM dog. I want to be able to point her to a breeder that has tested their breeding dogs. I too would want the same if I decide to get another pup in the future.

So far I have on the list yourself, and Videx who is going to test, and any others I may discover in the meantime.

I am so sorry that you lost your dog to this. It is such a terrible disease, as I said earlier once you have experienced it you never want to again, it is devastatingly sad to watch and to be utterly unable to help.  Because it is late onset, by the time you know that certain dogs are transmitting the disease, his/her breeding life is over and the damage has been done.  Now we do have a chance to change this. Perhaps you can 'campaign' in Ireland for this test to be adopted.
