Rin tin tin Jr. starred in the "Adventures of Rex and Rinty" . It almost looks like they used two different dogs to me but its hard to tell. www.tudou.com/programs/view/iB8yoSZXZ8g/

The first two were the best looking dogs by FAR IMO.

The original in 1925 www.youtube.com/watch

The man in the pic was Edward A. Bellande. I believe he was a famous pilot in the day.

Sportyschguy--You're right about "Adventures of Rex and Rinty".   I have a dvd with old Rin Tin Tin episodes on it and that series is on there.  I thought it looked like two different dogs but it is hard to tell.

I bought a dvd of them at Walmart over the Christmas holidays for $2.50.  You can check and see if they still have them.

This article explains more than anything else I can find. It explains the influx of white and the preference of the lighter colored dogs as well as the service dogs organization which is non profit.

Picture of the original Rin Tin Tin and his littermate Nanette.  Nanette is a maskless gsd with no black markings on her head.  This picture reminds me of two of my gsds pictured below.  My maskless red headed female gsd pictured on the left and my male gsd on the right:

According to the story the littermate Nanette died from distemper. This Nanette may be a dog they picked to be Rin Tin Tin's co-star.
