My neigbor visited me the other day, to help me change the starter in my truck, and we got to talking about dogs a bit.  He in his early forties, and only owned one dog in his life, as a kid.  Within the first week or two, his stepfather put the dog on a tie out and horrifying result put him off the notion of owning a dog since.  He now has two young girls that would love a dog of their own, but he doesn't have the experience himself to educate them in dog ownership.  What I'm getting at is, I think education really is important, especially if you don't grow up with the handed down lessons of a certain family lifestyle.  There were many important and simple things I had to teach to those girl's personal understanding, as they played with my boys in the yard.

Sorry, a little off this topic, but made me think about this:

I was just wondering how many people have their dogs included in their will?  I am single and always worried what would happen to my dogs if something happened to me.  Molly has huge medical expenses each month and Libby is now a senior.  I have a friend who has agreed agreed to take the younger two and two of my brothers agreed they would take one each of the older dogs.   I have money set aside designated for their care.  This is one of the main reason's that 4 is absolutely my limit on dogs I can have as I need to know where they would end up if something happened to me.

I have another friend who has designated a set amount of money aside that is to be given to the local GSD Rescue that covers the care of her dogs until a home can be found for them.

I just feel better knowing who will be taking care of my dogs in the event that the outlive me.  I cannot stand the thought that they would end up in a shelter, scared, etc. and need to know that the where they end up will be the last home they will have.

What plans if any do you all have?

Cheryl

Too bad you couild not stipulate that  owners be spayed or nueterd before allowed to dump a dog. I DO have great problem with how society allows it...this time its the **kids* fault :(  Good luck she has a lot going for her from the description you give!!!

I hate this discussion about enabling bad behavior. I rescue. I have asked the same thing before. Do I give some adopters an easy way out by reinforcing the fact that the animal can always come back here?
Had a few where I was certainly wondering. But still better than just to have them dumped somewhere because life either got the better of people (and heaven forbid there are folks out there that just don't have the support), or because I made a bad choice picking the adopter.
When you bring a dog home that has been dumped, abused or not, and you see them develop and in so many cases bloom, it answers that question for me.
But I still think most people should stop breeding. Or scale down at the very least.
Steph, I have a picture here that I purchased many years ago and just don't have any space for.
What about me donating it to you and we do sort of a forum based auction?

HBFanatic,

That's a great picture, I have known a few little dogs that thought the same thing.

 Right!!!!

I think it is after a print of Micky Mouse where he is doing a self portrait and on the easel is a picture of Walt Disney starting to take shape!
