I think it was Samba who said it's partly optical, and I agree. I have 2 solid blacks and while people often comment on what good looking dogs they are from photos, they DO NOT do them justice. Recently, someone from another forum came to my house and was surprised at how heavy boned and hugely substantial my male is, although she's seen countless photos of him for years, and thought he looked substantial from them. It is VERY hard for a black dog to place as high as another color, for this reason, plus, (my opinion anyway) they often are of slighter build (ususally from several generations of black/black breeding), and this makes it so much worse. If a sable dog and a black dog have the same bone, invariably, the black dog looks slighter. Just the way light plays off a black coat.
Since they typically don't do very well, people often don't even bother to show them....

My Django/Csabre son @ 6 months... Ikon is growing up. Not the best of pictures, but at this age it's a bit hard to get a "still" picture of him unless he's asleep!! LOL Blacks are absolutely a challenge to photograph.

Yes they are.
If you want to see a solid black heavy boned dog, I vote for Phantom von Hallyn Haus.

He has an excellent conformation and is an outstanding athlete. He always looks substantial.
