I will be getting my third dog for SAR (HRD) late this year or early next. At the point I will be acquiring a young adult but many of the same characteristics that make a good working police dog (and some sport dogs) can make a great SAR dog.
Currently I own a certified cadaver dog who will be 8 this year
Grim van der woude on the PDB
You need
Hunt drive out the wazoo (and this is something many breeders are not too savvy on!)
Nerves of steel (This is way much more important in SAR than in sport)
Not overly reactive and certainly not a dog that goes into defense too easily
Social is a plus (As opposed to civil, not as in a social butterfly)
Good ball and tug drive
Excellent physique
Always nice to get a dog on the smaller size side for heat tolerance and portability - you put a few handlers and a few dogs on the back of a gator- and it can get crowded.
-------------------
Congrats on the new partner. Hoping for growing up healthy and strong. Careful on overdoing it on those puppy joints before he is all grown up!
