Seriously, I'm not a big fan of other people petting my dog. IMO they should be totally indifferent to strangers. Little kids should be able to pet them gently under supervision but the dog should remain in obed position like sit or down. If adults want to pet my dog I tell them to please rub on me instead. If they concede I get warm feelings and if not then they look horrified and I get a good laugh. :)

SportyGuy..I don't think his dog is anywhere near the state of being petted by strangers....if he can learn to ignore strangers/passerby that are not paying attention to the dog or the owner than he would be just fine...I don't think kaoboy is asking for that anyway...

Oh...I'm sorry!  I just assumed correcting the dog for that was a no brainer. My bad! cheeky

yeh the thing is..
he had this reaction when i first picked him up from the breeder..
and now since hes 75lbs. i have to take more serious of this matter.

well he does schz. and i want him as a gaurd dog for the family.
but when we go on walks at the beach he barks and same issue even in a huge open area.
and i want to bring him camping and not have to worry abuot him too much.

his recall is really good and so is this ob.

maybe ill try to store thing. just becuase he has to be nuetral to this situation.

could it be something with his pedigree tho?

I think ur confusing the whole situation tbh u want a guard dog and u want a family dog yes u can have both but doin so without the right guidence is a disaster waiting to happen ur dog is at an age where certain things may triggar certain behaviour responses but it is down to u as the owner to learn how to correct these behaviours having a well rounded dog takes hard work and dedication from the handler.

Hes at an age now where certain responses might appear its how u deal with it that counts so mayb u need some advice and behavioural sessions with a good trainer in ur area or mayb u should have a chat with someone at ur club.

Kaoboy, have you started any obedience work with him?  I know some people dont start focus heel til much later on in schutzhund.  Anyhow if he is heeling...and only if.  Start your "fuss' as soon as you see what he would normally percieve as a threat.  the key is to get him focused before he goes off.  Ignore the barking as you are working on 'fuss" make it very clear that is what we are doing.  Pretty hard to bark if his head is up focused on you. hold his head in position if you have to in the beginning.  My favorite move is to simply change directions, we used to call it the charlie chaplin spin. Not sure what the younger crowd calls it. There are no corrections on this type of spin. you bend over put your hand on the side  dogs head and spin in the opposite direction.   Argg so hard to explain in words.  Anyhow you just keep up the pattern heel 10 feet spin heel 10 feet spin.  Your dog has no other option than to pay attention to you.  Pretty hard to bark when you are trying to figure out what the heck is wrong with your owner!  This work is done in the fastest walk possible.  The key is to physically have a hold of his head one hand stretched long to cover his eye and push his muzzle in the direction of your turn.   There are a lot of different way to correct this behavior.  Find what works for you :)  I'm a "this bad behavior isnt happening' we are learning this at the moment trainer.  Some trainers prefer to correct the bad behavior and then move on to the task.  I simply ignore it while working on the task at hand.  We all train differently do what works for you.

hi,

all your points are great...

yes he has started obedience , and my homework for this week. is teaching how to bark, and 'fuss".
and i will try your method with the hand on his eyes, and push his nose where i am going.

i kind of have a picture in my head about it.

i know i bank a guard dog, and a friendly dog.
to be honest if i HAD to choose i would pick a freindly dog,
the thing ive notice about dogs they can sense.

i have alot of work, i know. but he also has alot of growing up to do..
he might be 72lbs, but hes only 7 months
