Excellent post Linda.As with Bazza i totally agree.there must be champions in all breeds who HAVE NOT CONTRIBUTED TO THE BETTERMENT OF THAT BREED.Here in gsds we know that there has been several animals awarded championship status who because of their hip status could never have been bred from.They compensate with the build up of muscle tissue around the affected joint and their movement is sound.i personally dont see how this initive is going to work.If the show vet states that an animal is not fit for purpose ,does that mean that the CC then goes to the RCC winner and that animal then has to compete with the BOS for BOB ,and wot happens if the 4 top winners in a breed are all declared NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE???????????Carole S.

Linda B, An excellent post with very pertinent points being put forward. I was discussing these same points with one of our club committee members today when he rang to ask if I had recieved a letter from the Kennel Club as his local paper had carried the news story re the KC requesting vets to do health checks on BOB winners. The only difference is that his local paper reported that the KC had deemed this would be done at ALL Championship shows from now on and so thought that would involve our club having to pay for a vet to be present to do the checks at our Champ show to be held in June. After assuring him I believed it was only to take place for the selected BOB winners due to represent their breed in the main arena at Crufts, I did wonder if the practice was to be extended to General Champ Shows in the future.
Apart from the very important point raised by you Linda, I wonder if the KC have even lended a thought to just how dangerous this recent announcement of theirs is. For example, by this announcement they have informed the General Public that someone from the Veterinary profession will pronounce each and every one of 15 selected BOB at Crufts winners as being Healthy and Fit for Purpose before entering the Group Ring. Hoping you dont mind me using your lovely Randy as an example, but say for example he made BOB and the Crufts Vet passed him as Healthy (after all coming and going he is as sound as a pound!), now say he was not owned by someone as honest and reputable as you, it would not be unreasonable for MR Joe Public to purposely go out to buy a puppy by this Crufts BOB winner, after all he was Crufts BOB and subsequently given a bill of Health by the Kennel Clubs own Vet in attendance. Who do you think would then be liable if this particular Joe Public ended up with a puppy with severe HD? Surely the KC would be sailing very close to the wind on being found guilty of negligence and of providing misleading information relating to the Health of a particular dog !!

Just my 2 cents worth.. WHICH is...What if the KC comes to the conclusion that ALL dogs are fit and healthy, BUT only the dogs that THEY CHOOSE that win their class and if they DO NOT LIKE a CERTAIN dog, such as the German dog... or have a grudge against a certain breeder or breeders, they can ruin the dog and the breeder's reputation if a dog is not chosen. So... do they have xray eyes and look into the dogs bodies to see that the dogs are PERFECTION? Are the Champions examined on site? Bloodwork, xrays for hips and elbows, eyes, heart, thyroid, etc..will be examined? When would they get these results? Same day?That speedy with the results huh?
Just because a dog is a champion, means diddly squat! People lie, Judges can be bribed, and are buddies with their breeder friends. This is betterment of the breed?
Sounds like BIG BROTHER to me!

Too funny!!! All the roach back owners bleating on because the KC won't let their dogs win. It's this simple - if your dog is good enough and meets the KC standard (not some dream of Deutschland you have in your head), qualifies and is healthy then what's stopping you entering?
Could it be that Ms Balding hit the nail on the head last year and that the KC don't want to see another televised fiasco?
As for the call to arms to go off and do your own 'German' thing. Feel free. You won't be missed. Nor will you be missed at Crufts. Perhaps, for once, there might actually be a GSD make it through to the finals. Better yet, there might be an Alsatian.
