Breed People do us all a favour and do what you do best, carry on breeding brainless beauties. These working Dogs have years of Breeding behind them to do what the true GSD was meant to do, not run aimlessy round a ring for a squeaky toy or bowl of water.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and to me colour, conformation cannot replace the true working ability.
Please believe me this is not meant to be disrespectful, lets stay as we are for the good of the true GSD.

I agree with you about some of the top line show kennels... also that the working folk need to be keeping an eye to the conformation to insure that our dogs are athleticly and physically correct. The GSD is also a multi funtion dog. Just because a dog works as a Guide dog, or doing SAR, or Herding, Or Obedience/ Agility or as a Therapy dog... rather than as a Schutzhund Competitor doesn't negate their value as a dog, nor to the breed. If puppies from the high scoring Sch H dogs are not able to be companions and pets, or if an experienced dog person with some talent in training (of GSD's or other breeds) aren't able to cope with over the top drives it damages the breed in the eye of the public, and the future of our breed in a society that slaps Breed Specific laws in and and makes even OWNERSHIP a crime. Don't get me wrong... I absolutely ADORE MY WORKING LINE DRIVEY PUP... But many of the fairly good handlers I've taught in Obedience classes over the past 20+ years wouldn't have been able to deal with some of the behaviors. I know of more than one young dog who were Euthanized between 8-12 months due to this. Better screening of buyers, and of dogs that are included for breeding is critical.
The 100% beauty Pagent folk need to breed for mental stablality and trainability... for overall soundness. So that the dogs they produce that don't end up in the show rings have a life and a future in their pet, obedience etc homes. By the exact same measure the 100% competition folk need to breed for Social stability and overall soundness as well and to either keep the intense pups they produce which don't find competition or correctly experienced owners. Rather than pass along dogs which will be too strong for the average person to handle. Buyers also need to be pushed to do the exploration of what's available to understand the differences, and chose the correct litter for their needs...even if it means loss of $$$ to the breeder by refering buyers to a better suited breeder or litter.

Melba,
I like your black boy. The only thing: he has a short upper arm, a common thing in workinglines.
I have Frankie (and Nick Heiligenboesch) great-grandchildren and I really loved that litter.
My Vince has the best sidegait I have ever seen in a workingline puppy, due to his nice front. But as Gustav says, he has the wrong color. Regardless, I hope that he will be shown if for nothing else than proving that workinglines can be nice too. We could have sold him a few times already but we will either wait for the right person or keep him back ourselves.
Here is a photo at 12 weeks, it just shows his front a bit and topline):

His uncle Onyx (our Paska Salztalblick-son) looked a lot like that as a puppy and has multiple V-ratings so far and he has beaten a few showlines already.

Thank you Chris, I'll have to take some updated pictures of Nero as he was still very much a puppy in those, maybe 15 months old? I don't remember, but I do know some things change as they grow and he is now 26 months old.. done growing but definitely not maturing
. It is good to know your dog's weaknesses as well as his strong points. I do love Onyx, beautiful beautiful dog.
