They're not far from you and are well respected with decades of experience in both show and working lines and all aspects of training. Steve has excellent contacts both here and in Europe. I have sent several people to him in the past and he has always found them exactly the dog they were looking for.

if I were you I would listen to what Keith is saying, that kennel has a good rep and various pups to choose from,
and if they are within driving distance, that's the best choice, cause if you have a problem, you can actually go back and talk to them.
If anything, you'll have great piece of mind!
I don't ship my pups, so people come to my house to pick up or visit their pup, and like I tell them I've lived in the same spot for 28 years now, so I tell people if you have a problem I'm easy to get a hold of.
I am also a firm believer of buying local

I as well live near chicago. Bill kulla of kulla dogs in Marengo has good working line GSD. Also in Marengo is My Body Guard kennel. Expect to pay 1500 to 1800 for a young pup. This is a fair price for good working lines.
