The dog is either a bi-color or true solid black, no such thing as a bleed through solid black,
that's like saying "I'm a little pregnant"....it's one or the other;)

Although, I would not consider him a true solid black dog, I do see this a lot on solid black
dogs, somewhat of a bleed through, I would have to say he was a bi-color as he has only two colors in his coat.

I noticed that his parents are black & reds.
I found that when I mated two black & reds I would sometimes get some solid blacks.
When I would breed a sable to a black & red I would get some bi-colors.
Could the bleed through that I don't believe in be something like the white toes/chests that appear
sometimes in the breed, that maybe that is a related acourance?...

Hmm, I disagree about blacks, Mirasmom. Black is a masking gene, right? There are dogs that are genetically black but have bleed through. They produce as genetically black dogs do. They simply have some bleeding in between their toes or on legs. Also, bleeding can occur later in life. What do you call a dog who is solid black for the first few years of its life and then gets bleeding up the legs later on? The genetics haven't changed.

So far, any "bleedthrough blacks" who have been DNA tested have tested as being homozygous for the recessive black gene.

I'm curious--do these bleedthrough blacks have tan underneath their tail/around the anus?

RE: under tail, NO, or I would not call them black.

Pic. 2 has been bred to several females and produces as a black. Bred to black, all pups are black. Bred to sable carrying black, half black, half sable. Bred to sable non-carrying, all sable.

That second dog that Jen posted is my dogs daddy... not an ounce of tan on her anywhere!

So just because they have bleedthrough, doesn't mean they will produce it.

He has a small brown ring when you lift his tail but not a lot like the other bi-colors at the club where I train
