No, don't think it's quite common, but I do think it's normal behavior for some dogs. I'm not even sure that's why your dog tried to swallow that ball. I would probably use 2 very large balls with ropes when I play with this dog. That way he should learn that he will be getting another as soon as he brings the first back. If he doesn't know how to retrieve, you will need to teach him. I've had GSD's that stuffed their mouths as full of toys and balls as they possibly could but none ever tried to swallow any of it.

i recall in the early 80's someone i knew purchased a va import many thousands of dollars he swallowed a kong toy and died..
