Bhaugh

by Bhaugh on 11 February 2013 - 01:02

I have a shepherd that I just took into rescue that is eating MORE than a 170lb mastiff. She is skin and bones too. Not overly active either. She has normal stools and looks ok. Some dogs just dont seem to gain weight well. Esp females I find.

I was going to make a comment about the pancreatin. i also feed this in a pill form that is coated to break down in the small intestine vs being neutrized in the stomach. Mine comes from pigs (used to come from beef) You may want to try that. Mine is for humans and I get it at Iherb.

My female looked like she was starved for two years. she was EXTREMELY skinny all ribs and all sticking out but she looked like her muscles were inflated! it was bizzare.
She was funky looking, people told me she had EPI, nope just a body built like that. After she turned three it slowly started to look normal, she now can even gain weight.. to a point I have to regulate her.. lol

So as above people suggested, maybe it is just her.

You can keep guessing or you can ask your vet for a TLI test for EPI and know for sure. The longer it goes undiagnosed the worse it is for the dog as they are getting absolutely no nourishment from the food they eat.  The capsule spoken about above is called creon and it is pork pancreas crystals encapsulated so once it reaches the intestines it can work on digesting the food for the dog.

Thanks for all the info and tips. We'll keep working on her and hoping for the best.

That's a good site, ELDEE, and Maya looks great.

i have a mali who is quite skinny and i cannot get him to gain weight everything came back normal on tests he eats more than my shepherds and their weights are normal. i just figured with his higher drive comes faster metabolism and smaller body type

she looks fine to me, 2 yr old and 61 pounds is normal, she looks good. she will thicken up as her metabolism slows down by the time she is 4. swimming would build up her muscle...you can also give her pasta, egg noodles, there is even k9 fuel (protein shakes) for dogs, i never went that far but pasta worked amazingly...

P.S...she has one long azzz tail....LOL..

She isn't skeletal, just lean - and she is also at that immature 'unfinished' age. She does not look starved and gaunt like an EPI dog.  If it is EPI you are already supplementing with enzymes, she might need more enzymes but if her stools are OK then she is digesting all her food, so that's not it. As you already have her on raw, green tripe is very good at putting on condition, so you could include that (or increase it if you already feed it) as part of her diet.

Good luck with her, she's a very nice girl.

Looks good to me. They are wolf dogs. ;) Much healthier than a big fat GSD.
