You as the dog owner and handler must like what is at the end of the leash...
The former DDR dogs were bred for a totally different purpose...
We have two 6.5 month old pups at our Club... The father is a pure DDR and the mother is a West German/Dutch combination....
Father is lines to Zorro Laager Wall, Filou, Alf Kornersee, Iran Tannekrug, one or two vom Haus Iris dogs....he is full DDR...
Mother is lines to Pike Schafbachmuhle, Erle Buckower Feld, Arthus Lunscholz....one or two vom Haus Kalbach dogs....
They grip extremely hard and have very nice prey drive & over the top food drive as well...
We have seen young pups grip extremely hard but these ones go in the down position...thus showing us that they are using their body weight to pull and avoid being pulled whilst holding...
Basically showing us the fight drives at such a young age...
We should use the DDR dogs to our advantage...
Many Czech legends have DDR ancestry...
Addition: If you want a really good sport dog so that you can be on the podium, stay away from the pure DDR/Czech dogs...
They will give you good obedience, very good to excellent tracking but the bitework will cost you points...
Reason being they work in defence so will try and run through the helper instead of flying about 2 metres before the helper in the long bite...
They bark from defence dogs is not as continuous as the prey dog bark...
They are mostly more serious and enjoy the fight whilst the more common prey type sport dogs are generally just too happy to be on the sleeve....

As much as I LOVE Czech dogs or Slovak dogs. I have to agree..... the West German/Czech or Slovak combinations work really well. They are working well enough to place in the top level competition as was shown in the last WUSV.
DDR dogs became really good pet type representatives of the GSD world. If someone wants a nice GSD for family, DDR dogs are the far better choice than the trivey working machines for sure.
Czech dogs are my dogs of choice.I am all about the versatile use. But high level competition.. not at this point, maybe 10 years ago. I
Good dog is a good dog, all lines have something do add to the pool.

Look at this pedigree above. Look at the combo, discuss it, negatives, positives..
Nope, not my breeding, nope, not my dogs..educational only.

Egidius is a Slovak kennel,
they breed dogs that have proven themselves, does not mean someone slapped the word LEGENDARY on them.. I really dislike the word at this point. I don't even look at dogs with that description anymore... A dog will prove what s/he is worth without someone pushing it down everyone's throat!
kt484.
these types of combination produce nice balance in drives. some workable dogs with some common sence and ability to live in a house without owners loosing half of the furnishings..lol

DDR was the German Democratic Republic 1949-1990 (East Germany). During that time the GSD was breed for certain temperament characteristics, however is was 22 yrs ago. Those attribute no longer exists. The DDR GSD is long gone.

I agree that it's more defensive drives in those lines. That's one reason I like them, but as someone pointed out it's a lot more about the fight and not the fine-tuned precision they want to see in the protection of schutzhund. Now for police and military German Shepherds, you'll find a lot more Czech and DDR lines.

I have witnessed in the Czech and Slovic Reps a group of GSD breeders who are more willing to raise and sell to the police and military . They have the ability to put time into their pups and dogs to make them attractive to the agencys looking for K9s . I think that is one reason you see so many of these GSDs in the service of police etc. This does not happen to any large extent the USA. It is also a good post above showing how these breeders are using the western lines to enhance their lines. No breeder is an island.
