My crate usually goes commando. Occasionally I will throw a towel in there when it's rainy out to help soak up the water in their coats and keep the bottom from getting slippery and muddy. When we get home I throw it in the wash. My dogs don't sleep in crates so optimal comfort and crate sores are not an issue.

If everything is always getting shredded, I would probably not have anything in there. How old is your dog? Sometimes they "grow out" of the chewing everything up in their crates....I've been lucky, as all mine have always left their bedding alone aside from a few occasional little corner chews at the beginning. I use bath carpet mats in their vehicle crates which work great - no sliding around and easy to throw in the wash and dryer - but as I said, neither of them are bed chewers.

I used cedar shavings when Jami was crate training, kept on leaving less and less over a two week period until she had nothing in her crate. I have always been afraid of ingesting something.

I use carpet reminants, cut them to size, and if they get smelly or nasty I toss them and cut another.

I only use bedding in shipping-type crates.
I use newspaper when crating inside the house or car, or when I'm flying them. It's relatively absorbant... and cheap!
I prefer straw for the kennel or truck-bed. It provides better insulation and it makes better dog-nests. But it can be dusty, and I'd rather not to have straw-fragments inside or in the car upholstry. Straw on top of shavings makes the ideal bedding for utilitarian applications.
My last generation of dogs was very good about not shredding their bedding, so they got blankets, but this pack likes to mulch anything I give 'em. With my old pack, they'd only shred stuff if it got soiled, but these guys show no such discretion.

My baby loves her comfort, in her crate she has a mat with a dry bed cover and of course her teddies for a pillow, that is when she's not on her back snoring
