Ronnie:

I am very sorry about the health problems with your dog.

I has some health problems with my female a few months ago..  She has malabsorption issues and dropped alot of weight.  In addition her heartbeat dropped to 60 pbm.  Normal for her is in the 80 bpm range. She was very lethargic.   I was not happy with my normal vets wait and see attitude so took her to a specialist at a local er vet.  It was not cheap but neither was my once per week visit to my normal vet.

They ran ekg's, urine analysis, blood test's etc and worked with me on a treatment plan.  She has improved drastically in the past few months.

Since what your dog has is not common, I would find a specialist in your area that either knows about the condition and or is willing to work with you to find out what can be done for your dog.

I hope it all works out.

Ronnie, So sorry to hear about your problems. There comes a time when we must all now when to stop trying to avoid the inevitiable.  Please consider letting him go peacefully. PLEASE let a vet take care of that and don't take care of it yourself...JMO

Hi everyone,

thanks so much for your responses.

We are back at the vets in the morning so I'll mention his heart rate then. I'll also speak to the vet about the skullcap and valarian as I'd like to take him off it.

Things are looking a little more promising this evening as he's managed to pass a few short streams of urine - hopefully this is because the phenoxybenzamine is starting to work. He's still very very quiet though despite me giving him half the dose of skullcap and valarian today ...it's upsetting seeing him like this but I know that if the medication is going to work for him it may take a little time to get the dosage correct.

Moons  - I understand what you're saying - my fear is that the medication may not be effective enough for him to manage without catheterisation and I know that if this is the case it would be unfair to let him carry on. You're right - we have had problems with him from the start but on the whole he has been happy, playful and full of energy up until now.  I am trying to remain positive  - at least we finally have something to treat rather than a bunch of unexplained symptoms (I truely believe that the recent vomiting and loss of appetite are associated - his appetite is fantastic again today).

Red Sable - yes that's him :) I was hoping that someone may have experienced this problem but had a positive outcome with treatment, as I know it is possible. I'm sorry to hear that you lost your female with a similar problem - as with your little lady, he's absolutely part of the family.

If anyone else does have experience of this disorder I'd be grateful if you could let me know.

thanks again

Hi Cheryl, I only noticed your message after posting my last one.

- I'm glad your girl seems to be on the mend. The vet we are currently seeing has been fantastic. We've had x-rays, scans, bloods, urine tests. He did initially want to refer Murphy to specialists at the university but they advised that there were no further tests that they could run ..... they also agreed with the diagnosis of reflex dyssynergia.

Hi nonacona60
it is possible we may face making that decision over the next few weeks but right now there is every chance the treatment could work - we are only day 2 of the treatment and their does seem to be a slight improvement.
