Like Melba said...if she works for food that can be just as good.

As far as ball drive - She sounds like the type where "fetch" is too boring!  You have to tease her with the ball...make it imitate a mouse running for its life.  She'll come alive no doubt in my mind!  You don't even have to use a ball.  A tug can actually be a better tool - dual purpose, building drive while working on grip.  Use a tug (flat leather, an old dish towel or what ever works for you) and attach that to a string and tease the heck out of her.  If she has prey drive like you say...you won't be able to get her to stop!  I know mine doesn't!  :o)

Melissa.....she is hot and cold with food.

But I am going to try a tug with her.  I think I will have success wtih that and with a flirt pole.  I am going to pop by the tack store tody and pick up a whip to make a flirt pole.

I had started my six year old boy in ScH, he is over the top ball drive, plays all day,
but also can settle down, he is a therapy dog since 2007, has akc obedience titles,
but I am realizing that it takes a long time to train and achieve a title, I was told by one helper
that he could get a ScH 1.
I have many dogs to choose from to take & train, so I have decided to stick with his niece that's about a year old, and his daughter will take his place, she's 7 weeks and awesome.
I will though get an AD on him and try for a BH.

Six is old to start a dog, 2 is young enough, Good Luck!!!!

mirasmom;
It's not too late to title a 6yr old dog.
Unless the dog is not a good working candidate.
If the dog brings all the drive/temperment needed,
it should not take but 3-6 mos of training to get to SchH1.
This of course depends on how often you do
bitework, tracking and obedience can be done daily
all on your own.

If you were to do bitework 2x a week, and the other
two phases 5-6 times a week, you should have no problem
titling that 6yr old male in a short time frame.
Unlessthe dog does not have the nerve/drive etc needed-
THEN you will indeed have a problem.

Thanks for the advice workingdogz, he is my favorite companion,
I have been training with two different trainers, both very good, I have learned a lot and I trust their
opinions, one says it's possible to get a ScH1, the other says that maybe when I go to trial
with a total stranger that he may wimp out, I would like to get a ScH1 so as not to regret
later, he has come a very long way from having been abused in the past,(he was returned to me at 7 months old >a basket case, not as he started out) Now I find him very stable and highly intelligent and trustworthy, if anything, should we go to trial and he is a dud, it really wouldn't embarrass
me, as he has already achieved way more than I ever thought he would!
