I have to wonder if some dogs w/continual diarrhea are either simply nervous types or have an underlying health problem that their owner has failed to treat successfully.

I have never seen tripe give any dog diarrhea- even an 11yr old rescue who had never had a speck of raw food in his life. Tripe is like "THE" perfect dog food.

No problems with runny stool with my one dog that gets tripett - I don't feed raw (which is the main reason I prefer the canned variety) but when I used to feed raw as supplement - my dogs turned their noses up at the raw tripe I offered them.  And it was so disgusting to handle, and smelled SO BAD that I've never been interested in feeding that again.  Canned tripett - that's the way to go LOL - and I do think it makes a difference, at least in my hard-working dog - in muscle mass and tone.

Thank you to all who commented.  I will be adding tripe to the diet here..............canned..........until fall..... when there will be more fresh available.  I hope to see a difference in the dogs.  I don't have any "problem children" but can't help but believe that over a given time that I will see higher number of sperm in my males and full litters coming from the girls.  Birko I believe will benefit from it..............being 10 now..........even though he doesn't show it....will help him feel a bit younger anyway.  Again...thanks to all who took the time to comment.

I buy frozen tripe from Urban Carnivore. Senta really loves it. She's currently very thin so she needs all the calories she can get.

It's frozen into patties so it's convenient to handle and has minimal odour when frozen. The day I bring a box home, I score a line down the centre of each patty with a cleaver, bag each patty, and then put each patty in my husband's bench vice and squeeze- the patty breaks neatly into two. It sounds complicated but I can do the whole box in about 5 minutes (including running from the kitchen to the basement). This makes it easy to toss the amount I want into Senta's bowl.

I feed green tripe 3 times a week; due to the longs shifts I do my wife will feed a complete Food in the morning such as Orijen, then in the evenings the dogs gets fed just tripe, sometimes tripe and Orijen, once a week chicken wings, once a week tinned Pilchards or Sardines.

Tripe is low protein, but very high in vitamins and enzymes, unlike processed food its all readily absorbable. The dogs do increase muscle tone, body fat drops, they have a hard sinewy look about them, high energy, solid stools etc.

Bad points is the smell is outrageously bad, you do have to scrub your hands hard afterwards, and the dogs will run through brick walls to get to the tripe!

It really is the food of champions. Gold standard is to feed complete tripe i.e. it hasn't been minced so the dog has to tear it apart, it puts huge strength into the jaw muscles.

Ah, fresh green tripe...... the good old days :)

Nothing better for the dogs in my experience.  I too used to get it straight from the abottoir and dare I say, the smell of it fresh is just wonerdful!  If it's gone off a bit though.... MY GOD, nothing worse!

And agree with above comments, never seemed to cause the shits, and they all had nice clean teeth and great condition.  I didn't mind the breath smell.

Bernhard Flinks says he uses tripe to teach his dogs to track....would that work with the canned variety?  Is it chunky?

We use tripe too, I buy the canned Solid gold and it works great.

I've thought about feeding tripe as I feed raw but I'm super sensitive to smell and I just cant get myself to buy it. I wonder if the increase in mass has anything to do with the steroids that are fed to beef. Dogs that are increasing their size... are the cattle holistically fed?

Yes; all the sources I've ever used were organically raised cattle- grass fed, no antibiotics, no steroids.
