From talking to a friend of mine  it looks like they do have to teach and encourage puppies so they learn that  leaning into the collar is desired when gaiting in the ring, and they must learn to gait for a very long period of time.  The problem with using a pinch collar on puppy that is going to be a show dog is the pinch collar teaches the exact opposite - do not pull, therefore, I believe common sense dictates  it would be counter-productive to use one on a  pup destined for the showring, at least  during the learning phase.

I could be wrong, hopefully one of our show dog afficianados will see this thread and educate us all.

I don't have a problem with pinch collars, but this dog is supposedly destined for the show ring, so it's not like a pet that is supposed to always walk loosely at your side, and it's not a dog destined for schutzhund where one of the concerns of using a pinch on a puppy is making him collar wise, among other things.  Personally I have never needed to use a pinch on even the strongest of puppies, but that's just me.  If a person who's dog is destined to be a pet needs a pinch in order to walk comfortably with their dog, I have no problem with it.

Remember too, for a pinch to be used appropriately, the correction is a snap, you don't let the dog pull into it.  Also for a pinch to be used appropriately, it needs to be fitted correctly, just behind the ears & pretty tight so it doesn't fall back or twist around.

Sue
I thought the same thing as you did as it was destined for the Show Ring. But i did not say anything at all to the Lady, The Dog did not looked stressed out so i let it go, It is not likely we will run into each other again but she must live in the village to have seen her.
I do not use a Pinch Collar on a Pup until it grows up a little about the 7 to 8 months old then they need to start learning the way we want things to go on.
Hektor was started on a Rag or Sack in Protection for the last two weeks that is now stopped for a couple of Months because he will not let the sack go. So steady away certainly no Prong collar for him for some time yet he can be a Puppy for some time still.

Training for show you do good training with a harness so the dog leans into it and develops nice chest muscles. You don't want to give puppies to harsh corrections on the collar, first of all because a strong pull on any collar can hurt them and second you don't want them to be afraid of you. It's all a matter of training to walk nicely on leash....

I think choke collars of any kind a useless - if you have a high drive dog they don't care about being choked at all...and it doesn't help against pulling. If the prong collar is used incorrectly with a too young dog you can raise yourself a fearful dog very easily.I agree with Steve, I would also start with a prong around 8-10 months of age, but only if the dog has a strong drive..

This lady obviously couldn't walk the dog and the pulling had to be interrupted, no matter if he was going into show or not. But especially for ladies with a delicate physique training the dog is even more important!
