The testicle has a chance of dropping still. If by 5-6 months it hasnt dropped it will not.
If you do not plan on breeding you should still consider the dog. We had a chihuahua (totally different breed, I know. lol) we got from a breeder, They told us he was a cryptorchid. We LOVED him so we purchased anyways for half the price. We later neutered him at 7 months. Now, He was a small breed so I didnt feel bad about neutered so young.
If you do NOT removed the retained testicle it is likely to develop cancer. However, its unreal to have to neuter him at 7 months. I'd personally want to have him neutered around 20-24 months. It would not develop cancer if left there that long. Cancer is likely to develop past 4 years.
Good luck and hopefully you decide to get him.

even it the surgery is expensive, you have a year or two to save up for it.........so save 2$ a day and before long you'll have plenty to pay for it....... that's less then a cup of starbucks.

Is it just me or do the opinions on this subject sway back and forth both ways?? My pup will be 4 months on the 22nd and only one testicle has descended. The only concern I have is the cancer scare since I won't be breeding. I've heard both views ( hurry up and wait). My vet won't even neuter until 6 months but I have read that the sooner the better. It is confusing to say the least. I wouldn't return Rocky for the world though. He is my hiking bud already!

There is a slightly increased risk of cancer in the testicle if stuck in the abdominal cavity...basically, think about testicular cancer and its odds. What you don't want is testicular cancer taking place in the abdomen...far more likely chance of spreading and harder to treat. It's not so much a case of "if left there, it will become cancer" and more a case of "if cancer develops and it's left there, it's more dangerous."
I did tons of research on this over a period of several years, and that's what I gleaned from it, in a nutshell....pun intended.

Ok, 1 testicle the dog will produce more testosterone than a dog with two.
You have no plans to breed RIGHT NOW, however, shit changes.
I have very little luck with pups dropping if it is not there at 10 weeks.
If you are working the dog, do not neuter till 2 years.
There is a greater chance of cancer, but it is not really likely. I am not sure why dipshit vets insist on saying this.
I would not pay for the dog. No one wants a 1 balled wonder that is even halfway serious about dogs. The breeder should give the pup to you on a contract that if it does drop, then you pay for the dog.

We've had this happen once or twice with dogs we've bought or sold.
The first was a pup we imported for someone else, at 5+ months the testicle still hadn't dropped and the buyers returned the dog to the breeder and we got them another puppy, 3 weeks later the testicle dropped prior to us sending him back to the breeder. It was summer here and we couldn't put the dog on a plane in the heat so we were keeping him until it was safe to fly.The second was a pup from our breeding that the vet didn't want to say that it would or wouldn't drop (pup was 8-9weeks) so we kept him and gave him to our daughter. We have no idea when, but at some point we just realized the other had dropped after 6 months of age! I realize these incidents are probably not common, but just wanted to let you know that it can happen and not to get mad if you see the dog a year from now and it has both. In the first case, the breeder was a bit peeved and thought that maybe someone was trying to pull a fast one on them, but we had the vet send a sworn statement. The dog ended up as a working K9 back in Germany when all was said and done.
