FWIW I have a Showline male and from 8 weeks old till this day he has never run with his tail between his legs from anything (imagine that )...As a very young pup he was exposed to everything under the sun and he would rather bite it then run...lol...little rascal...;)  He is still the same way...

It sounds to me that your pup was doing the sensible thing by leaving the scene ...lol...That is a smart pup IMO...: )   Even if he would have ran away frightened, at he age I would NOT hold it against the little guy...;)  I do agree that it may not have been the best situation to put him in....However, I don't think he'll hold it against you....: )

Sounds good. Just please remember development stages and fear stages while planning out his conditioning to everything around him. Enjoy your pup.

I've met awesome S/L pups too. I knew a young sable male who had several points toward a title who was VERY brave and outgoing. :) My girl, though, is not and never has been. She's an amazing companion, though...but a bit of a coward. Takes her quite a while to get used to new people. She's fine with other dogs, though.

...yeah. I feel like I've done a wrong toward my little man. Too much too soon. Didn't think about these things until they were pointed out.

I like the word desensitising better than socializing.  Take him around other dogs, but not up to them.  Teach him learn to ignore other dogs and people on your walks.
He shouldn't be afraid, but he doesn't have to be everyones best friend either.

I want my dogs to always  be focused on me and not to worry about what others are doing.

Your puppies reaction was very normal.

I consider that a normal reaction for a 14 week old puppy in that situation.  I own 3 WL gsds--3 yr old female, 2 yr old male, and 9 month old female.  They all have different personalities, but none of them are friendly with strange dogs.

Red Sable, I am so glad to hear that. The whole time I was reading this, I was thinking the very thing. I'm new to a large breed dog and in obedience class we don't let the dogs "socialize" like humans would, we make them sit or stand at our side and ignore the other dogs even when one acts up. My 23 week old would have gotten extremely scared if I had done that.

iprince,

Try and understand that when an OP initially put outs out the thread that we respond only by what you stated. Now if you keep adding or changing the situation/scenario then our responses are going to change also.

I'm not going to dissect word for word but in my eyes here's a couple of points I see and I tend to agree with GSDguy08/GSDNewbie and a couple of others. Now, don't think we or I am ganging up on you but try to understand.....
I believe you stated you observed the "junkyard dogs" interact with humans BUT never with other dogs? You stated that a couple got out and came over to your yard and you took them back. That's only half of the pack or half of the equation. And still, you and them, not your pup and them. I hate playing Devil's Advocate with a passion but the average person can't control two dogs fighting let alone five! And when a pack of four turn on your pup or you and your boyfriend. Are you really prepared for that? Just the other day I was at the Marina and a Pit Bull, (on a boat) saw another dog, (lab?) at the end of the dock. That Pit Bull jumped off the boat onto the dock and was running full speed going towards the other dog and the fight was on! Both dogs off leash and everyone was screaming. The Pit Bull had the Labs throat/ear/head and would not let go. Idiots tried to "pull" the dogs apart. Then a man started to punch the head of the Pit Bull, (like that was going to make him stop) So now with the screaming, the HYPE, and the punching on the Pit Bull what do you think that Pit bull is going to do? He's going to turn it up! I'm two docks over and yell "throw them in the water!" but it was such a mess that no one could hear! Well after a couple of minutes, MINUTES! the owners are carrying the lab to the vehicle to take it to the hospital.

That's what can happen in the blink of an eye with only two dogs. (This was just last week) so imagine if four dogs, adults, attacked your pup, you or you and your boyfriend. The average person will lose.

So, the reason a few of us are upset or seem harsh is because the situation just didn't "happen" you contributed to setting it in motion to possibly happen..... it ended well with no major problems. Like I stated we can only go by what you type.
Seeing these dogs for two years behind their fence is not knowing them. Or knowing how they will react when a strange dog, doesn't matter even if it's a pup. Knowing how they will react when a strange dog comes onto or near their turf.
Moments like that can open up a can of worms..........

"BARK, BARK, BARK, GROWL, BARK" means a dog is not scared. Got it! Good to know!
