I think 4 weeks is way too early.  It's likely ineffective anyway because maternal antibodies will overpower the vaccine and prevent an immune response.  We vaccinate at 6, 9, 12 & 16 wks and for our adults, at 2 years (or whenever I buy them), then no additional shots.

Vets do not know more than any layman who are well-read on the subject of vaccination.

There is not much technical about it. It is a matter of atttitude and judgement.

4 weeks is too young.  I vaccinate at 7-8 weeks, then recommend booster at 12 weeks, then depending on the vet a 3rd booster at 16 weeks with 1st rabies vac.  After that, booster for everything at 1 year, then nothing except rabies after that, rabies every 3 years.

Ok, thanks everyone I'm going to wait to vaccinate until 6-7 weeks old, & not worry about getting the 2 shots in before they leave me.

high desert, laymen, like myself, has to use common sense. when a licensed vet who is college educated tells me not to vaccinate before 8 weeks.i am not going to listen to a laymen that may have an attitude problem.
i have seen anywher from 4 weeks up. is this attitude or adjustment?
if i have a bad attitude then i can make the adjustment and vaccinate at 20 weeks ??

I do a distemper/ parvo shot at 7 weeks.. then recommend the puppy buyer vaccinate again in 3 to 4 weeks.. then whatever their vet recommmends..

I am trying to follow Dr Jean Dodds protocol. Minimal vaccinations. I vaccinated this litter at 7wks with Distemper/Parvo only. I am getting ready to give the second vaccine for them now at 12 wks. Again distemper/parvo only. I have been very careful with them. Have not been exposed to other dogs/areas. If you trial a lot, you can bring something home to them. Even if that dog doesnt have contact with the pups. I have just the one bitch and she is a stay at home mom before/during/after whelping.
