in a real life situation someone can come up to you pretending to be friendly , and , when close , grab you or your purse , so nothing strange there ,.

by destiny4u on 24 April 2011 - 18:04

pp trainers will try to lure the dog in being friendly if the dog puts its guard down he gets hit with the stick to condition the dog to never trust a stranger that was agitating him or her

byrn i think the guy beside him was instructing the dog with some kind of comand like watch him or get him

by brynjulf on 25 April 2011 - 14:04

Destiny, I didnt get the instruction part at all, maybe i just couldnt see it.  I agree Duke that PP dogs are taught to react to friendly turned foe but only AFTER the dog has learned the basics.  My point is that he was reacting fearfully, clearly not ready for the type of pressure that was being put on him.  Baby steps then we learn to run.

It bothers me to see a dog that clearly isn't suited to the work, being worked in a venue like PP.

It's one thing to take a weak dog, and decide to play in Schutzhund and just work the dog at it's ability level.

Personal Protection isn't a venue where you can, or should, be working dogs that aren't cut out for it.
It's not fair to the dog, you aren't getting what you want/need out of a PPD, and you're creating a serious liability.

bryn , I dont see fearfull , I see lack of focus , but thats partially the mistake of the guy next to the dog , as the decoy gets passive he talks too much , and at one point the dog reacts shortly , it looks like he got hit on the nose there , but recovers very fast ,  , I agree with sporty , the dog doesnot look bad in this clip ,however ,  the lack of focus makes me wonder if he will be the right dog for the job in the end

The dog is not a bad dog, But he is definitly not a dog I would pick for PP. His temperment is not what I would like. He as a ppd would always be a made dog that to me I could not recommend for someone whose life may depend on the dogs inherant character. No slam on the dog, just not my type for pp

Question - If you have to lure a dog in while you are showing his "civil" drive  is the dog really being "civil"?

by duke1965 on 25 April 2011 - 18:04

you cant have a dog being civil 24/7 , you want a normal , social dog that , if triggered , will defend you , I myself dont like the clips of PPD where a dog is hecticly barking from the beginning to the end , I want a dog to be calm , and switch on when a threat is present

I think the training in this clip is not bad at all , but if the attacker can come close and hit the dog on the ass  when the dog is facing the other way , makes me question if this dog is PPD  material
