I thought it was interesting that he was critical of breeders taping the ears.  Does anyone have a comment on this aspect of his article.  ecs

Taping ears is just another way to disguise a deficiency, IMHO.   If the pup has one ear that needs a little help, simply because you are impatient, that is one thing.  But, the people who actually have to "train" the ears to stand, because they would not come up otherwise, are simply trying to hide a flaw.  These are the same folks who have a kinked tail surgically altered, or a fake testical surgically implanted, because it is so important to them to show the dog.  Or, just as likely, it is so important to a breeder to present a progeny class that is "perfect."

Soft ears are soft ears...and genetic.  Covering it up is simply attempting to hide the parents' genetics.

Mystery, I agree with you, however, I think there has been a couple or more articles on this board advising how to tape ears. ecs.

Yes, there are lots of ear-taping threads. Lots of people doing it, just as there are people dyeing dogs for shows, having tails straightened and testicals faked. Most just don't give advice on those things...at least not publically. :-)

Does anyone have any information as to what that "Canto" dog died of at only 4 years old?   If the dog died because of an accident, fair enough - but if it died at 4 years old of a disease, I wonder what unseen genetic defects might have been involved.

Mystere,
Just a little info........taping or forming a dog's ears to "make" them stand......cannot be done......you can "help" them stand.
All taping and forming ears does.....is allows the ears to "circulate blood flow" through out the ear and prevent "creases", that would decrease the blood flow.
If you see dogs that have "weak" ears......they will always be weak.......no amount of "forms & tape" will cure that. Being able to stand, does not mean strong ears.
ONLY surgically altered "weak ears", can give the impression of strong ears........
Dogs with genetically "weak ears" will pass on that trait........you can see them quite easily waving "bye-bye" in the wind!

Just an observation.

If Javir places VA or high V at the seiger show it will appear that people are starting to listen to people like Herr Hoffman in action and not just words!!
