He looks like he could be a DDR dog, with the big, blocky head and big bone. That would be my guess, anyway!

Hope you can find out more from the doc!

No ear tattoo, or tattoo on the inside thigh, which does make me think he did not come from Germany.  But its possible he came from somewhere else in Europe, or maybe was just born here in the States of course.  But this dog did not come from a puppy mill, and he did not come from American stock, and I'm dying to figure out what bloodlines produced this dog.

My uncle was Grant Mann's kennel boy back in the 1930s and 40s, so I come from a "german shepherd family."   I grew up with an Axel Kirschental son in the 70s, and I was a Wolverine Schutzhund Club member in the 80s and early 90s (only club in Michigan back then), so I saw many different bloodlines and what kind of dog they produce.  But this dog is different.. he's kinda like the rottweiler version of a german shepherd: wide, muscular, solid.  He looks like you could hit him with a 2x4 and he woudn't notice.

I have seen some DDR dogs here in Michigan, but they are small compared to this dog.  Are Czech dogs big like this?  I am not familiar with Czech lines.  He also came with a very dominant attitude: his response to doing any he didn't want to do, was to snarl.  Not a scared defensive snarl, a stand-over-you-I'm-the-boss snarl.  We fixed that right away.  But you can't scare this dog.  He doesn't even startle.  You can drop a pan next to him on the kitchen floor and he won't jump.  Nothing backs him up or even gives him pause.  You can see I'm really impressed with him!

Anyway, thanks so much for all of your good wishes.  Feel free to post or send me a note if anyone has any info on where my old man came from.

Best,
Val

I should clarify to say that I have not seen that many DDR dogs.  I have always had a german shepherd, but I've been away from the "dog world" for many years now.

Gosh what a lovely boy.Lucky him and lucky you.
He reminds me so much of a dog i rescued from Battersea Dogs home, many moons ago. The face tells a thousand stories. I never knew anything about my lad but he would have defended my family with his life. I have had German shepherds for all those years since. Quite a legacy.

Definately a well-bred dog and certainly not from American lines or a "backyard" breeder in this country.  He maybe was not imported if he does not have any ear tattoo - are you sure?  Look in the right ear, turn it inside-out with good lighting into the ear (use a LED flashlight if you have one) - you should see some evidence of green, even if you can't read the actual tattoo.

My old dog Eagle looked quite a bit like him -with that head and bone I would also guess this dog also comes from DDR lines.

How big is he? You say the DDR dogs you've seen are smaller. Mine is 100lbs....and wears Rottie-size gear in stuff like muzzles due to his head and muzzle shape.

He has a DDR look to his face, more so than a typically Czech look, but that all depends on lines. His attitude reminds me VERY much of a DDR dog or two that I own or have owned. Just write to the doctor and find out all of it. I can't imagine why he wouldn't tell you. Maybe he'd be happy to know the dog is ok. After all, the dog probably wasn't on his hit list. ;-)

Not all imported dogs are tattooed.  My last one from the Netherlands was chipped, no tattoo.  He was 5-years old when I got him.

Fine looking guy.  Sounds like a perfect fit since you know how to handle him.  Best of luck and please do keep us posted on how things go and what you find out?

If you write the doctor I would also include a photo or two of the dog for identification.

I would not be surprised if he was tattooed but it simply faded away. This can happen with shallow tattoos, particularly with time.

What a great dog. This is why I tell people with $300 budgets to check rescues!

What city and state was the dog rescued from ....................   the dog has a DDR looking head with a LORD face ..................... the brown mask around the eyes ...............  I am from Mich .............. let me know .....     I had tattooed all of mine in the right ear with green ink .............. do what Molly suggested with the special lite through the back of the ear because dogs with black pigment are difficult to see the tattoo................
